Hi all, :)
I have a question about a day trip. I never went on a canoe before and was wondering if anyone on this site has done it, and had any effects the next day with a lupus flare.
It will be a full day run 16 miles.
All my children and grandchildren are going and want me to come. Lately i have had alot of energy and am bored with everyday life at home. My last week appt. with my rhuemy said i am in remission with my lupus.
I have a UV protective shirt to wear and will use my sunblock, hat and sun glasses, and take a sm. umbrella along. A cooler with food and ice w/plenty of water. I am a little nervous about doing this day trip but at the same time anxious to the thought of having a good time.
Any canoe experiences here,or advice? :hehe:

Once you are in the canoe.....Don't stand up until you reach the shore!!!! I learned that not from experience, but from all of the "Americas Funniest Home Videos" shows I have watched:rotfl: Seriously, I hope you have a lot of fun and find being on the water a really relaxing and beautiful experience:) Oooh, Florie, just thinking, that is a long time without access to a bathroom......maybe not too much water??

Used to canoe with my boys when they were younger... I love it ... but due to achy shoulders can no longer paddle... so make sure you are in a canoe with people who can do that for you and enjoy the ride...
as far as the bathroom thing... that is why God put friendly bushes along shorelines:)

ummm in my healthy days i used to canoe down the river thames... it is quite a lot of strain on the shoulders, so unless you are feeling really good, and you dont mind your muscles aching afterwards, go for it girl...
it's definitely lots of fun-that is if you fall in:-)
enjoy it all

it sounds lovely, I would just sit in the middle though, the paddling would do in my shoulders. duh ,I have never been in a canoe, can you sit in the middle :rotfl:
But seriously it sounds like a perfect day and you have thought of all the resources to use. we are not dead just have lupus and have to take precautions.
I am jealous, would I fit in, I would be scared to tip it
have fun
ahhhhhhhh sweet memories for me! Just cover up Florie and let someone else do the hard work of steering/rowing. As long as you arent going down any rapids you should do fine :wink2:
Have fun!

Flori,
I never went canoeing, but it sounds like loads of fun! My husband and I used to white water raft alot. We went down the Salmon River here in Idaho and the Payette River here also..The Payette was a day trip and oh so fun! It had class three rapids, so it gave us a good ride. Those were younger and healthier years for me..Glad It did it then!
You have a great time and be safe..
Love,
Sandy

Thanks all have replied to my thread :wink2: ,
I am told that the river ride is like a lake and the water level is just enough for our dry season. There are no rapids or water falls, that was my first question  and since it's a full run there will be areas along the way for picnics and BATHROOMS :p . If not yes, plenty of woods and bushes, will be looking out for any alligators before i do that. Am told there haven't been any problems with the gators but to still look around
I have two weeks to really think this one out. As for the middle of the canoe, well thats for kids to sit or infants. But you can come along goats while i paddle. If i get tired of paddling we can tie up to another canoe, there will be plenty of us going.
I am having fun just thinking about it, there will be sandbars along the way and they have fossil hunting. But i wont be looking for any teeth along the way since the run is so long not enough time. Have to be back by 6:00. Lets see if this grandma makes it or has to be towed in :rotfl: .

Florie,
I absolutely loved Florida-you are very fortunate to live there and that is coming from someone who lives in"The most beautiful city in America" That is what they call San Diego and it is very lovely here, Florida has us beat. It so lush and green. The ocean is just the prettiest blue. The Pacific Ocean is gorgeous, but in a very different way. It is hard to explain when you have lupie brain fog:rotfl: May I ask what part of Florida are you from? When can I visit:wink2:
I have not been canoeing(sp?) but I think it sounds fabulous!!!!Go for it.:cheer2: Have a blast!!!!
I have been asked to go down the Colorado River in Arizona in August, but I had to decline A. I am not in remission B. the temp can get to 115- 120 and I can't handle the heat like that. I plan to do it in a cooler month and when I am a tad healthier:blush:

Sounds great Florie. Hope you decide to go and have a great time. We can miss out on so much with this. While you are good seems sensible to get in some excitement.
Think I will need to be canoeing soon. We have had torrential rain for nearly two weeks now and the river is about to flood. The only thing is dont think I would be able to get in and out of it. Had terrible trouble when I went in a sidecar once. Was great fun but had to be pulled out by a big strong biker. (How embarrassing)
You gotta live though eh.
Have fun.

Ooh - go for it Florie, and have a great time.
I have never tried it, and I'm afraid I would suffer with my shoulders like so many others, but I would love to have a go none the less.
But ... only in England. The minute I read the word 'alligator' I turned sissy.
If you wanted me in a flimsy bit of wood anywhere near a fast in the water creature with enormous gnashers you'd have to supply me with some sort of jet propulsed suit AND ejector seat.
Without suych devices I wouldn't even go near a puddle in the USA. Far too many scary beasties if you ask me.
Have a whale (wail?) of a time!

Erm ... grey squirrels (that came from the USA).
No - only joking - I like squirrels.
I can only think of Adders, but we don't usually get them up North. The only thing likely to cause pain around us is the odd wasp, but unless you're allergic, the fear is far worse than the pain and (relatively) little lump you get.
Most animal incidents are caused by people's domestic dogs, but not very often.
My neighbour got a nasty scratch off one of her chickens once ...
You'll find things in parts of the sea, and close to the shore you might find a spikey sea urchin underfoot, but I've never done it - in fact I'd be excited to even see one. Our crabs are generally small on holiday beaches. Oh, yes - there is a little sea fish that burrows in the sand you might step on that stings. Doesn't kill you though.
I think we have exterminated just about every potentially dangerous creature out of the country. I remember an American business colleague asking my husband about going hunting when he was visiting the country. We asked what he wanted to hunt, and he said bears, and we howled laughing. We don't have those in Lancashire, and there are no wolves anymore.
Fox hunting is now banned, so I imagine you are only left with deer. Neither are terribly scary, and there are strict rules.
Nope - I'm trying hard to think off anything that is not safely (unfortunately for it) in a zoo or safari park that might be deadly.
Blandford fly can be unpleasant. Horseflys?
I remember an angler in Gloucestershire being shocked to the core when an enormous terrapin emerged from a canal. Somebody had released their foreign pet and it had survived and grown 'massive'. Exactly what he thought it was going to do to him I do not know - I guess it was just a shock. 'Massive probably meant as big as your hand, by the way (only joking - how would I know how big it was?)
I mean, we are more likely to be put off by an angry swan on our waterways than much else!
Can anybody help me out a bit?
There must be something out there ... (other than the bogeyman).
