Hallo,

Those of you who are more tech savvy than me, HELP
Is there a way of getting rid of the adds that come up at the top of the page?

I frequently have flashing adds there that make looking at the screen nearly impossible. It is driving me mad:eek: .

Any help gratefully recieved

Hey Cath,

I don't think there is any way to get rid of the adds...

I usually scroll down so only the line "User CP, FAQ, Members List etc" is in view; that way I don't see them!

Hope you're doing well,

Zoi

I just do the scroll down thing too - actually I do it so automatically now I had forgotten there even were adverts up there !

It is likely to be a financial thing - sites like this cost a lot more without the adverts, for obvious reasons.

I have asked my brother.
If he replies it'll be anything short of a miracle as he's one of these constantly stressed very busy IT geniuses but hey, it's worth a shot.
and yes, they are very irritating.

I'm flabberghasted, he replied!!
He says that your Internet Explorer (version 7) pop up blocker needs activating and that should do the trick.
Of course ,if it is activated, it will also block things like the chat room so if you want to go in there you have to hold down "ctrl" at the same time as going in. You get used to doing that.
Hope that helps,
Katharine

Yikes it's me again - He replied in "full" - I'm in shock, this is my brother we're talking about. Anyway, here's his reply. I'm just copy / pasting it so sorry for the funny IT person speak and for him calling you "he" - I just said someone

so here's the answer he gave

well that sight is a free forum thing, and as part of that the only thing is the banners ads at the top, if he is seeing other crap coming up he has a virus I would say (as I tried with pop-up blocker off and no pop-ups)

Tell him to do the following...

go to Start menu --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services.

In the list of services check if "Messenger" is set to anythign other than "Disabled" in the "Startup Type" column.

If so he is vunrable to remote exploits or spyware that will spam him with popup adds no matter what page he access or even as soon as it detects internet (Broadband) connection.

If this only relates to the forum you mention, then that is odd. As I say, I see banner adds ok, but nothing crazy.

And if he is talkign about the relatively inoffensive banner adds at the top of the page, well... thats what you get when people use "hosted" forums.

might just mean you have to "scroll down" as zoi said,

Thank you everyone!

I'll try the check your brother suggested. Our computer labels are in dutch, so I need my husband to tell me what corresponds to what,

But thank you to your brother very much from me.

And thanks for the tip on just scrollong down. Silly, but I never thought of that one:rolleyes: .

Hi Cath

I have turned off my pop up blocker to see what happens. I do see the ads up at the very top even with the blocker on and haven't noticed any problems here before but maybe I'm always scrolled down.
I will keep a special eye out now though. I loathe these flickering moving things

Hugs

I just saw one with blue and yellow stars running across it for an internet advertising campaign. I refreshed the page and there was another couple of ads on. I turned my pop up blocker back on refreshed the page and the ad with the stars is now back up so I conclude that the pop up blocker doesn't stop those any more than it stops the smaller google ads running across the top.
It doesn't stop other sites ads either when they are an integral part of the page, like yahoo front page or some of the medical sites.

It does stop them popping up on the information section of the site. It looks like the only way is to scroll down to get them out of sight.

The income from click throughs to these ads helps support the site. Joanne the owner and founder bears the costs from her own pocket.
I quite often click through just for the sake of it.

:)

Hi Guys, those flashing ones also tend to start a migraine. Katherine, can you find what else it will block? so that we underlings, that are not Tecks,
will know if we are safe in doing this or not? Thank's a heap.

I would seriously doubt that there is anyway of turning the ads off, as advertising is the way that they pay for these sites. Pop-ups can be blocked with blockers, but not this type of ad as it is part of the way the site is built.

I highly recommend the scroll down technique - I suffer from both migraines and light sensitive seizures, if I am feeling 'delicate' in either of those directions I just close my eyes as the page loads and open them once I have flicked the scroll wheel on my mouse.

works a treat, in fact I am so used to doing it that I hardly notice that I am doing it anymore.

I find I just have to get devious to get around stuff like this, I keep telling myself 'where there's a will there's a way' and it helps me keep my pecker up.

Hi all,
Yes, I'm afraid for the remaining ads, not blocked by the pop up blocker, you need to just scroll down.
Those ads are, indeed, the ones helping pay for the site.
So, all in all Raglet and zoi have got it covered :)
