  • Autoimmune liver.....

hi...im just asking to see if anyone can explain please....when i have had high liver enzymnes..171. ect....my cholesterol has also been up high also?!!......now are these two conected?.....the consultant hasnt been concerned about this(st Thommies).....also..as my hep B C results came back negative all ok...does that mean i was tested for liver disease?...or i dont have hepatitus?...its very confusing at times?...My gp thinks i may have autoimmune liver.....i would be happy to hear your advise please...jane

    Hi Jane
You are right it is confusing isn't it.:worried:
The Hep B and C tests would have ruled out the viral hepatitis. You could still have an auto immune hepatitis.
Remember hepatitis only means 'inflammation of the liver' for whatever reason.
Do the docs have a plan for your treatment or are they still debating a diagnosis?

        Hi Jane,

Here's some info on Autoimmune Hepatitis. There are some additional tests they could run to see if this is what you have.

            Hi Jane,

Yes you would need a positive ANA and other symptoms and bloodwork to be diagnosed with Autoimmune Hepatitis. Did you have a positive ANA (sorry I can't remember).

Are your skin biopsy results due back soon? I hope you get some answers from that and also your visit next month at St. Thommies :luck:

hi lily....yes 2 years ago....but i saw gp today and he says esr is ok...so no sign of inflamamtion at all in me?!! but liver enzx are still 129..and have been for a year now!!.....he says he thinks they should put me on steroids.....but i rather they find out the prob first...why and how is my liver up that high...i also have a ultra scan being done on friday this week...bilary one.......also i always have a low neutrophil count..lower than the normal range....no one says abt that so i suppose its not inportant.
I hopefully get results of skin biopsy next week......yes the results be back for when i go to st tommies......goodness what they will say now?......not a lot i suppose.......jane

                Hi Jane
There are lots of possible reasons for high liver enzymes so I wouldn't jump to the conclusion it is autoimmune hepatitis or even something to worry about. There are many other tests that need to be done usually, to determine what the cause is. ANA would normally be present in AI hepatitis but it isn't diagnostic of it as it is for lupus

I do hope you will soon get some answers - the skin biopsy might well be conclusive, with a bit of luck.

Wishing you lots of luck !

                Hugs

                  Strange goings on with diagnosis

                  Hi Jane

I was particularly interested in your post ref the local rheumy not accepting the dx of lupus which had been made previously at lupus clinic. You wonder how this can happen. I have been having similar problems and have managed to get a referral to a new rheumy whom I see next week. My original diagnosis was made by a rheumatologist from St Thomas's and it was confirmed by Dr D'Cruz at the lupus clinic. For some reason my local rheumy chose not to accept the diagnosis (although I think he was coming round to it as he had gone from writing ?SLE to Probable SLE. It has taken him a year and a half to reach this conclusion! Having had enough of this nonsense I asked for a referral somewhere else and have been extremely fortunate to get it. I live a fair bit away from London so prefer to be seen locally if possible.
Anyway, sorry to hear about your liver problems and hope you get to the bottom of it.

                  Kind regards

                  Rhona
