Hi,

I am wondering if any of you have noticed you are resistant to certain drugs (specifically antibiotics) or had drug resistant infections?

Is this a lupus thing or just a weird Sharon thing? :hehe:

I have been battling a UTI and a group B strep infection for the last 8 weeks, been on strong antibiotics for 5 weeks and still have raging infections...they are not responding to antibiotics...doctors are stumped...and now planning to refer me to an infectious disease specialist -

Thinking back over the last few years, I have had other types of infections that did not respond to certain antibiotics.

So I am off to pharmacy to pick up my 3rd two week supply of antibiotics - much to my dismay since I really dont want to expose the baby to yet another round of drugs, but OB tells me if I dont at least keep it at bay, I will go into premature labor.

If anyone knows of any studies or articles on the subject, I'd be interested in the link.

Thanks!
Sharon

Sharon,

It is not that we are drug resistant but our bodies require stronger medications for a longer period of time to get rid of whatever is going awry like a UTI. Strep is usually a very strong infection that can be hard for even a "healthy" person to battle. Has your doctor changed the anti-biotic or increased the dose for you?

Take care,
Karen

Hi again,

I really don't know the answer to that one especially as I haven't had an infection (other than the odd mild UTI) since I was pregnant and that was 9 years ago.

At that time I had repeated bronchial infections that wouldn't go away and I ended up on antibiotics for 4 or 5 months of my pregnancy - I think I actually told you all that before :) so sorry if I'm repeating myself.

Obviously, we would rather not take any meds like that while pregnant but I just had to trust my docs and my son is a very bright, intelligent and healthy little boy who obviously didn't suffer despite those strong antibiotics.

Thanks-

Karen, no, they didnt change it but I am now on it for 20 days, instead of 10 days like the last two times. I believe I will have to take it until delivery, if nothing else to keep the bacteria levels lower, since right now they are maintaining quite high.

I would have thought they would change the med, but they are limited to what they can prescribe for me right now. It just kind of freaked me out when they told me I had to see a infectious disease doc for a resistant strain strep in my bladder.

Katherine, thanks for the pep talk about the antibiotics and your healthy little boy...it calmed my nerves a bit! I think I am more worried about the effects of these infections are having long term rather than the antibiotics. Every two weeks the telephone rings, and the doc tells me I still have an infection...it has been getting frustrating and depressing...I told them to stop calling me!!! LOL:)

Anyhow, I guess I'll live!
Thanks again..Sharon
