Blefaritis

546 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  lullrich76
I have chronic blefaritis and was wondering what kind of threatment there is for it.
My eye doctor tells me to clean my eyes with babyshampoo and use a warm compress.
I use a eye gel and eye dropps.
My eyes get so red bloodshot at time I can barely see straight because it hurts.
Any advice on this?

Hello

Are you using Hypromellose eye drops and Chloramphenicol eye ointment / gel, Vlinder?

I think you can get both at any chemists and they are not expensive.

The important thing is to make sure your hands are really really clean before cleaning around the outside of your eye with ordinary saline solution first to get rid of any crusty / sticky bits before administering the gel or drops. Use separate cotton wool balls / gauze squares for each eye - do not go from one eye to the other with the same ball / gauze. You could boil some water to make sure it is clean, let it cool, then add a small amount of salt instead of buying saline solution, but with the drops and gel clean plain cooled boiled water is probably good enough.

Make sure the applicators do not touch your eye and change the bottle or tube regularly. I do not keep mine for longer than a week - 10 days in case I have touched my eyes with the applicators and contaminated the solution / gel. The product is only sterile as long as it is unopened and most products will eventually grow germs, which you can reintroduce to your eyes.

It is also useful to keep the left and right eye applicators separate and labelled LEFT and RIGHT to reduce the risk of passing infection from one eye to the other and constantly cross contaminating your eyes.

I am sorry your eyes are so sore - it's blooming awful when your eyes hurt.

Take care

Hi there,
No,I am using vidisic carbo gel and optrex eye drops and the baby shampoo.
I use different cleaning tissues for my eyes and not the same for both eyes.
Hello

If this has been troubling you for some time and the routine hygiene hasn't help it would be best to see an eye doctor. There are topical and oral antibiotic therapies that could help, if there is infection.
I think it's important to get it treated because it can cause lasting damage.

Blepharitis can be associated with lupus and with Sjogren's both of which cause dry eyes. Discoid lesions can affect the eyelids and be mistaken for blepharitis.

Hi Clare,
I have been to the eye doctor many times, there is no Sjogren's.
There is nothing she can do for me.
Have seen two different eye doctors.
Whats the link you gave me?
I see a page but not with info on eyes?
Hi

I am sorry I clean forgot that you have to register to view Medscape articles.:( Go to www.medscape.com

Registration is free. There are several other articles online with similar content. I thought this one was quite good. It is a useful site.

Do you mean you haven't been offered any treatment for the blepharitis at all ?

Bye for now :)

I have the eye gel and drops that's all she gave me.The second doc I went to said the same:(
Hi again Vlinder,

I really don't know very much about this as I don't suffer from blefaritis but it sounds very much as if there could be more going on here than "simple" blefaritis and that your symptoms may be being caused by your DLE and being mistaken for blefaritis. As many docs know little or nothing about things like DLE they may not even be aware that that is a possiblity. Do you see a dermatologist regularly? Are you satisfied with the level of control of your DLE or has it got worse recently?

It sounds like getting a second opinion on your DLE and possibly some med adjustments might be well worthwhile.

Just my thoughts for what they're worth,
Katharine
Already had a second opinion, but am going to see my GP, never seen him since I changed GP recently.See what he says.
I also have blepharitis and my eye doc also told me to wash with baby shampoo and do hot compresses. I have terribly dry eyes and use drops as well.

Good luck!
