My left knee has been stiff and swollen and painful for months. I know that if I could get my weight down another 20 pounds it would be fine. But I'm not 20 pounds lighter and I have to live with it right now.

Which brings me to my question: Yesterday it poofed up a big lump on top. It's obviously filled with fluid of some kind (don't want to think about what kind) and I can move it around and it feels really tight, of course, when I bend my knee. There's no sore or visible break in the skin. But it feels like I could poke it with a needle and let off pressure and it would stop hurting so much. Can I? Has anyone ever done this? Any thoughts on how far I would have to stick in a needle? I'm just a bit squeamish of needle pain but could handle doing it if I was going to get quick relief.

What do you think? Oh yeah, I've had a fever for several days now, up to 100 and back down again depending on if I've been drinking cold stuff and eating aspirin or not.

Sunny , DO NOT poke a hole in it, I would see a doctor, I had a staph infection that became very serious,I am not saying you have an infection . what I am saying is you go poking into things you will get an infection, in MY opinion

I know doctors, doctors and more doctors are getting boring. but they do help.

let us know. please

take care

Dear Sunny
Gosh I wouldn't even dream of poking a hole into it or any other part of my anatomy. Please, please don't ! You would be making a hole for external infections you might be carrying ( as might we all ) to enter.
For another thing, I wouldn't want to have to go to the doctor's and tell him what I'd done as I quite like to have some credibility and cover myself for the silly things I do do sort of accidentally.

Take good care of yourself please

Many Hugs

Hi there,

I just wanted to say that I agree with the others!! NO WAY, should you be going poking holes in yourself!! - It does however sound like it is time to go to the doc ad see if he believes that poking a hole in it would / would not be useful.

Anyways, please don't go in for any auto-treatment/auto-mutilation, it could be highly dangerous and I think we have enough to contend with without bringing things upon ourselves.

Do not do it!

I once helped lance somebody's lump in casualty many moons ago.

It turned out to be a carbunckle.

Hurt the person quite a bit.

The puss shot out so fast it hit the ceiling showering us all with the old green stuff. Smelled revolting.

We felt in future it would be done when the person was sedated or at least tied down! :smile2:

Yours doesn't sound anything like a carbunckle.

You are dealing with a serious joint and do not want a bone infection. You leave it be and get a doctor to deal with it using nice sterile objects with nice dressings and pain killers around.

Hi there Sunny, my hubby is going thru the same thing right now, he will see a dr on Mon. First, there is no way that you can properly sterelize the needle, so that brings in germs, causing infection,. You don't know where to poke or how far to go in, another risk. Even if you just go to your GP, he would be qualified to do it.Please take care of yourself, get help, and let us know what happens, cuz we care. smile

Ok, you guys convinced me. I won't poke a hole in my knee. But I do like that idea of poking a hole in my head to let the brain fog out. ROFL..... it might do something horrible to the environment though. I can just see the polar ice caps melting instantly.

I had been going to make a reference to needing holes in knee like a hole in the head but thought it could lead to misunderstandings

Hi Sunny

I hope you get some relief soon for that lump. Is it at the front or the back of the knee? If its in the back it could be something called a Bakers Cyst.

Im glad you arent going to poke a hole in it. Many, many years ago I developed a lump on the front of my thigh which was very unsightly, a bit sore and red. It kept getting bigger and bigger and one night I decided to poke a hole in it  The darn thing bled and bled and bled :eek: I ended up having to go to the hospital. It turned out to be a tumour! Luckily, after proper removal and testing, it was of a benign sort.

Since then I tend to steer well clear of self surgery! ;)

Let us know how you are

Luv n stuff
