So, I went to a dinner party and got sick. My pcp gave me a zpack and allegra-d. The zpack is almost gone and I am still soooooo sick. He warned me that the allegra-d should be taken by 3pm at the latest because it would keep me up all night. I have news for him! Within 2 hours of taking it, I crash out asleep for several hours (about how I react to benedryl). Has anyone else had this happen to them now that they have lupus? Is there any cold medicine anyone can recommed so that I can breathe again even if it's only temporary?

Thanks

Hello
I think you need to get back to your doctor for further help or at least talk to your pharmacist who will know the details of your case. I have no idea what sort of after dinner party sickness would need treating with an antibiotic and an anti histamine. Usually people whose lupus is confined to the skin are perfectly well otherwise and react to medicines just like anybody else can react except that there are certain medicines they would be normally advised to avoid, in case they make the lupus worse.

People with systemic disease would avoid the same sorts of medicines for the same reasons and then would need to be careful about other medicines including OTC meds, in case they interact with what they are already taking for their lupus. Reactions to all medicines vary widely in the total lupus population just as they do in the general population so there's not much that applies to us all and we are each individual despite having the same diagnosis.

For stuffed up noses from ordinary colds I use capsules with oils like menthol and eucalyptus in them that you can break on a pillow, but I don't know if that sort of thing would be suitable for you. You can buy this sort of essential oils for use in inhalers or burners too and there's always Vick.

I hope you'll be feeling better soon

I'm guessing a cold was caught from attending the party and it turned into a sinus infection given the meds prescribed and my own experience with them!

When a z-pack cures me... I feel a big difference by day 2 and am nearly fine by day 4. I have a feeling you will need another antibiotic to cure you. Some meds I have tried to help relieve the symptoms are straight pseudo-ephedrine and Mucinex (doctor recommended for me a few times when symptoms were really bad). They did seem to help, but nowhere near as much as the right antibiotic will help.

I also think it's time for a return trip to the doctor...
