Just a bit of background;

I have been diagnosed as having Sjogren's syndrome for several years.

Before the dx and starting in 2004, I had several ANA tests come back positive 1:1280 atypical speckled (sometimes also with homogenous) with one also indicating cytoplasmic fluorescence.
One ENA was positive for RNP and I was referred to a specialist who wasn't terribly helpful.
My gp then referred me to a clinic at the teaching hospital where I was seen on a yearly basis (aside from initial visits ). It was here I was given a dx of Sjogren's around 2007 and more recently Raynaud's.
A different lab handled the blood tests and gave ANA results in international units but were still considered high. For the most part, I had positive ANA with few nuclear dots (anti coilin) plus homogenous at various levels between 15 and 30. On some of those tests, cytoplasmic staining showed up again but no follow up tests were done.

A couple years ago I decided I wanted to have consistency in case so went privately with the head of the department. Unfortunately he stopped doing private assessments early last year.
I finally got in to see a different immunologist who ordered a bunch of blood tests back in December. I just got copies of the results in the mail but won't see her until Saturday.
So what's very curious is this time I have yet a different pattern called dense fine speckled at 1:2560. I again had the cytoplasmic staining and did have tests for AMA and ASMA...ASMA came back weak positive for the first time (I have had separate tests for these antibodies). The few nuclear dots are associated with ai liver disorders so this isn't totally a surprise although this test showed DFS which is rare in ai conditions.

Anyway, I am just wondering how likely my ANA would change so significantly within two or three years of previous labs....if anyone has any better knowledge of this sort of thing than I.

I will obviously be querying these results when I see my doctor but obviously the discrepancy is bothering me. I ask here because I posted here years ago before I was dx'd with some questions and had very helpful answers.

Hi Purple Lorikeet and welcome to the lupus site.

I know sometimes it takes awhile for the labs to catch up with the symptoms.

Im not well versed in the lab tests but here is a page from the main site of this forum that will probably be more help than me.

Lyn, "the requested page could not be found". How do I access the page the long way without the link? I need to know what pattern my sister is Speckled like me or something else. Hers is "Nuclear, Dense, Finely Speckled", which was not an option when I was dx.

Hi Stephie,

The site has changed hands since 2014 and the informational home pages were removed. Much of the same information can be found on line. Entering ANA patterns should bring up the diseases having a speckled pattern.

Take care,
Lazylegs
