If they still look infected, then you may need to try a different antibiotic instead of more of the same. Or if your sinuses are also infected/affected. I was recently on Augmentin, then a "z-pack" and the z-pack is what got rid of the infection for me.

That said, it is fairly common for ears to feel full or blocked for a number of weeks after an infection. Do you hear any fluid moving around in your head when you move it quickly? That for me is actually usually a sign that I'm heading in the right direction. My ears also feel full/blocked still, but not painful.

Oh, one more tip, sometimes I have to take pseudo-ephedrine combined with Mucinex to help thin the secretions out to get them to drain properly. You may want to ask your doctor about this to see if it will help in your case. They are both available over the counter in the USA at least.

If none of this helps, then a trip to the ENT may be in order. There are some conditions best assessed & treated by them that can cause this long term fullness in the ear, especially if associated with other symptoms like ringing in ears, etc.

Hi,

My son last year had an infection in one of his ears and received antibiotic treatment for 5 weeks. The antibiotics were in the form of ear drops. He did also get a swab done to check what type of infection it was! I do know that there are antibiotics that are more specific use in respect to ear infections. My son was seen by ENT at the hospital I would serioulsy suggest you get your GP to phone for an emergency appointment with the ENT clinic. He also had pain and major wax blockage in his other ear and that was sorted with special saline ear drops which softened the wax so that cotton buds could clean out the wax.

My auntie had to get grommits fitted at age 45 to help with ear blockage!

I would certainly ask for a referral to an ENT clinic to get your ears checked properly by a specialist!

Let us know how you get on on Monday.

Love Lesley

hi. thanks for your replies.

i havnt had an ear infection, ears are clean the docs has said that the blockage is behind the eardrum, the tubes are blocked.

the antibs are for a sinus prob which has been going on for many months, they have given me a progressive treatment with nasal steroids, antihistamines, antibiotics, to prevent any probs with chest as i suffer bad in that area with chronic ashma.

for years i thought i had colds but its niot they dx it as being chronic rhinitis.

but i still cannot pop my ear,and it has started to hurt after i try to pop the ear by holding nose(this is what the g.p. has told me to do).

my hearing has come back a bit(the ear affected is my left ear)i still have tintitis and a pulsating feeling in the ear,my balance is affected but not to bad.

the doc said it is similar to when you fly, when pressure get in the ear,but i havnt flown or done anything to explain what is going on.

thankyou so much for your replies,it means a lot that you take time out to be understood.

many many thanks jo8

Hi Jo,

Whether your ear drum is blocked or infected it may still be crucial for you to be referred to ENT (ear, nose, throat) Specialist. If you have ongoing or recurrent sinus problems and tintitis ENT are the same people you need to see! They will also do a hearing test as well!

Remember ENT look at what is going on in the areas connecting ear, nose and throat!

I am only giving advice on personnal experiences of myself and my son but if I was in your shoes I would be expecting to see a Specialist by now.

Take care!

thankyou lesley, for your reply and concern.

yes i do agree with what you are saying, but you know docs they just leave you until it ends up an emergency.

i have had this for 6yr but in all honesty my docs are unaware of this as i always thought i had colds, this time i had no choice but to get treatment as it has gone on since nov last yr continuously.

but i have ear probs for yrs more pain in behind the ear, they always itchie.

i am obviously in a flare as i cant move my left leg very well the kneecap is hurting like mad along with everything else.

all i keep doing is crying i am on cymbaltra which i think are a good drug as they have helped with some pain.

but at the moment the most i can do is just sit and wait for it to pass, but it becomes overwhelming when so much is going on.

i am still itching everywhere,i am on a strong histamine but dont seem to be doing job,i feel a total wreck i am absolutely devasted about everything,as i feel i am sat on a time bomb waiting for something to happen.

i have to see my doc on monday,i will speak with him and tell him i am not happy with dx from rhumy, that i believe more is going on.

i know people with my dx m.e./cfs and they do not suffer with there skin on the scale i am.

my bloodwork is all over the place to,so perhaps it will rear its ugly head now, lets hope.

all i want is to be on the rite treatment as at the moment my quality of life sucks,i havent a life i dont go anywhere as i get so sick.

i just want some peace now.

love and best wishes jo8

Hi Joanne,

What a terrible time you are having! I've suffered from ear, nose & throat problems since I was a child. I was told that I had narrow tubes and canals which caused bacteria to grow, I also have allergic rhinitis.

Normally if I had a sinus infection my ear would get blocked too - my doc would prescribe anti-b's, a decongestant and painkillers.

The most common causes for a blocked ear or fluid is a cold, sinus infections or nasal allergies. A stuffy nose leads to stuffy ears because the swollen membranes block the opening of the Eustachian tube which connects the back of the nose to the middle ear.

One of the things I didn't realise is that continually blowing your nose causes scar tissue to build up within the sinuses and makes the problem worse. It really would be advisable to see an ENT doc who can insert a small camera, which isn't painful to see what's going on. I had so much scar tissue that I had 3 minor ops called Nasal Diathermy which just zaps the tissue with a laser. It could even be caused by polyps which can stop your sinuses draining properly. All these things are very treatable.

After putting up with this for so long you are well within your rights to ask to see a specialist. Let us know how you get on.

thankyou for all your replies.

pam you are spot on with what you said,i do appreciate your reply,i will see my doc on monday and ask to be referred to an E.N.T.as you would understand having the same probs,it gets very wearing nobody really understands unless they suffer with it.

it is the pits.

Pam can i ask you do you also suffer with allergy skin probs, react to anything,it has made it awkward to even wear shoes,my feet swell and itch.

do you have any advise on this condition that might help.

yor advice would be most appreciated.

hope you are well, love and best wishes jo8

Joanne,

Yes the pain and discomfort can be awful, at times I wanted to bang my head against a wall to see if it would help! I actually have a blocked ear at the moment for the first time in ages. Thankfully it's not bothering me too much but I am on anti-biotics.

The only skin allergy problems I have are with perfumes, cosmetics and jewellery. They only started about a year before my diagnosis. It sounds like your allergies are quite extreme. Do you see a Dermatologist at all? They can carry out different kinds of tests to see what you most react to and help you avoid them.

I really hope you get some relief soon.

Lots'a'luv,

dear pam,

i spoke with a different g.p.today,as mine was not in,i explained everything to her she said enough is enough, that she will advise my doc to send me back to dermy.

she said my skin has got so severe it is worrying,i cant tell you how over the moon i felt and relief, she spoke of immunetherapy, but she cant authorize it,i have to see a specialist,

my ear is still blocked, but i will have a long talk with my doc on monday about it all.

so now she is trying me on another antihistamine with the hope i get some relief until i goe hospital.

i really hope it helps, i did explain to her that i am not mad,but very soon i will be, lol, she really did understand.
