Hi. My name is Carrie and I was diagnosed with lupus in 2007. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced any eye problems? I was diagnosed as a glaucoma suspect this year and I have been having swelling around one eye accompanied with pain. These are all new symptoms. I thought the swelling could be related to an allergy, but I'm not using anything new. I will be going to the rheumy on Wednesday and I will mention this to her. Any info is appreciated. ;)

Hi, I just saw the optho...and it seems I may have inflammation of the macular that can lead to macular degeneration.

I haven't been able to find any information on a link between the two, so who knows.

Could be be the sjogrens too i guess, however my symptoms at this time are pretty mild and my tears seem to be soewht OK...the schrimmers test registers between dry and bone dry...so not bad yet.

Good luck - Stephanie

Hi Carrie and welcome,

By far the most common problems with the eyes in SLE patients are dry eye syndrome which can lead to problems if left untreated. However there are other problems associated with it, see the following article:

Glaucoma is more often associated with corticosteroid use, we don't see many people with it here and if they do appear it's often discovered they have been on long term steroids. What meds are you taking? That would help determine the cause.

Hope this helps,

love

Thanks Lily and Stephanie...I appreciate the info. I am on prednisone 10 mg and have only been on it for a few months. I guess I would need to be on it much longer than that for glaucoma to develop. I will see what my rheumy has to say and I will keep everyone posted.
