I have been suffering from lupus many years. Recently I have been experiencing lots of painful dry eyes again. Over the years I have used many different eye drops ( corticoid - allergic and artificial ones).
Now I am using the artificial ones and the allergic ones but no relief.

I feel like I am very sensitive to perfume, beauty-products. They all make my eyes hurt and sting and burn without being actual in contact with them.
How do you know whether it is an allergy or lupus ?

Hi, you can get the dry eyes with lupus, they do a blotting paper test to check how dry your eyes are. I believe the opticians can do this. Lupus can cause our allergies to be worse though as well, lots of members have to reguarly take antihistamines to help them. I would go back to your gp or optician and get your eyes checked out. You should then be able to get some treatment to help you. I hope this is of help.

It's probably in your best interest to go see an opthamologist and get his/her opinion. They have a lot of options for treating dry eye these days and they may be able to distinguish the cause as well (usually eyelids on the inside are redder than normal if it's due to allergies I think). There are punctal plugs, and prescription eye drops for dry eyes and other prescription drops for allergy eyes.

Hope it improves soon one way or another!

Hiya, I have sjorens syndrome overlap...I used eye drops but had a reaction to them and had to be prescribed artelac.I use them 3x daily and get some relief....Do tell the rheumy incase you have sjorens. have a think, do you have difficulty swallowing, dryness anywhere else? :hug:

PS the dry eye test is a schimmer test

Hi,

Thank you all for answering my questions.
I have made an appointment with my ophtalmologist next Thursday. Maybe she can give me another prescription.
I will definitely ask her about the Schimmer test.
I don't have difficulty swallowing.

I will let you know what the doc says.
Do you feel like certain things make your eyes hurt more. F.e. perfume, or beauty products ?

Hi Maura,
I can't wear mascara any more as it makes my eyes burn and hurt. I can wear some cosmetics but not mascara or liner.
I do have sjogren's, but can wear my contacts with prescription eye drops which I use instead of lens solution. I also use only sensitive eye solution to store my gas perm contacts.

Hi Maura,

My eyes get irritated with a lot of things. They bother me a few days after being in a smokey room. (went to a casino)
I cant walk down the detergent, soap isles, I sneeze my head off and it bothers my eyes.
They are extra sensitive.

i have Sjogren's too. They put plugs in my tearducts but they still get gunky and at the end of the day red like I have been crying all day. But I haven't been cause unless something is really emotionally painful I don't have the tears. Hope you are better today.
