Today having taken out my weave (wig hair sown on to my hair) I was not prepared for the fact that I am almost bald. My hair looks like I have had chemotheraphy. This is the first time that the illness has really affected me. Being afro caribbean, our hair does not grow as fast a european hair, so I'm really very sad today...........

Hi (((((((((((Jacqui))))))))))) :hugbetter:

I'm really very sorry to hear about the loss of your hair.... :(

Massive hair loss can be incredibly shocking and very upsetting and quite rightly so...

I don't know about the rates of hair growth but I'm assuming you have curly hair? I have very curly hair and have had wildly out of control hair loss a couple of times so far; so much so that I had prepared my self mentally for needing a wig to cover the bald spots both times. Nonetheless with some strategic styling from the hairdresser's and with a rather drastic haircut the bald spots managed to stay hidden until new hair grew. Is discussing this with your hairdresser and maybe cutting your hair short a possibility for you? Hairdressers often work "miracles" and know how to hide bald spots one doesn't think possible to hide.

Are you on any meds for your lupus Jacqui? Have you told your doc what happened yet? I do think that it is a good idea to let your doctor know, if you haven't done this already....

Sending you loads and loads and loads of hugs Jacqui :grouphug2::grhug::hug:

Hi Zoi,

Thanks for reply. My hair has fallen out to the extent that I would have to shave it off completely for it to look remotely acceptable........:-(

I'm on 30mg or Prednisolone and 400 mg of Plaquenil. Don't have a Rhuemy appointment til Oct 17th. Will tell them.

Thanks for hugs. Much needed and much appreciated.

((((jacquip))))

I too have horrible hair loss but for me it seems to be mostly in the temple region of my head, yet it is getting very thin all over.

My hair is blond and I keep it very short. I think if it were a little longer I could hide more but frankly I look horrid in long hair.

I have also lost some of my eyebrows......talk about hideous looking. My mom asked me why I plucked them half way off.:mad::mad:

Anyway, I just wanted you to know your not alone here and by the way my hair grows very, very slowly so like you there is no quick cure for me either.

Sending warm hugs and thoughts your way.:wink2:

Don't mean to hi jack but i have question about hair loss. In the shower when i am washing my hair it comes out all over my hands ...maybe 20 strands of it. I don't if this is normal or classed as loosing hair? I know people loose hair every day but is it that much?

Hi Jelly

Normal hair loss for women is between 100 and 125 strands per day. True hair loss is when this amount of hair is not being replaced naturally or the daily amount exceeds 125 strands

Hope this helps

Dear Jaqui,
Just wanted to add my good wishes. I have had these problems too although my hair is alright now so long as I really look after it.

Hair loss can be a sign that lupus is active, maybe if the disease is better controlled your problems with it will end.

A good protein diet is needed for making new hair. My Son almost ruined his on a crash diet and the hairdresser told us how much he needed protein.

Hi Jacquip

I'M also from the Carribean, My hair loss is also terrible. What i did was cut my hair short and had my hair weave glued in. When i removed it can just wash it out and not many hair are lost that way..

I also try to keep my scalpe oiled or grease and i have my hair washed and condition every week professionally. It has helped with the quality of my hair.

Jacqui!

HUGS to you! And all the ladies on here loosing theirs as well. I think as women, this for me has been one of the hardest side effects. I know it is hard to cope. I have spent time in the bathroom, looking at all the hair in the shower, crying. I am slowly balding on the top sides of my head. I think once it goes, I am going to shave my head and get a long blonde wig :rotfl:

I hope you are feeling better soon!
