I've had the pain in both knees but it's mostly my left knee. If I don't move it for awhile I get horrible pain when I do. Almost like everything tightened up and doesn't want to stretch. I have to do "labor breathing", short, quick breaths to tolerate the pain. Once I am through that, it's just a dull throb. I had it happen in my foot as well after I had fallen asleep in a strange position. I am on Plaquenil everyday as well as Imuran. I hate the Prednisone and am trying to avoid it but this pain is horrendous. Does anyone think it's something other than the Lupus? It goes away but always comes back. It gets red and hot sometimes as well. I used the analgesic creme and it did help but then my pants stuck to my knee and that was annoying... :)

Tinamarie-
Hi! I can absolutely relate to the knee pain you describe, though mine is absolutely the worst at night while I am sleeping. While I have problems with both knees, my right knee will literally lock-up with pain when I stretch it when I am sleeping (you know how you do that to relax?) and then it eventually releases and I am doing that labor breathing thing too trying to come out of it. Usually I am back to normal though by the time I wake up. Since all of my pain is worse at night, I am sure it must be the Lupus (and this did not happen prior to my symptoms and diagnosis).

I use Biofreeze or a natural menthol lotion prior to bedtime if I am feeling stiff or puffy, which seems to help a bit (at lease distract from some of the discomfort). I am always on anti-inflammatories, so the knee pain coming and going does not seem affected by these drugs too much.

I did have my knees x-rayed early on as I was being diagnosed and the rhematologist didn't find much amiss there. So...I assume increased inflammation that day in the knee whenever I get it. Sorry if that isn't too helpful...just the way I see my knee problems.

It might not hurt to get your knees checked out, just to be sure.

tinamarie,
Hi yes I know what you are going through. Please look up fibromyalagia and see if this sheds some light on what you are feeling. You can also get a mild pain pill instead of the pred. I have ultram for times when i need it and it does help most of the time.

Monica is right biofreeze is great along with any of the over the counter icy hots, aspercreme, any of these are short term fixes and often don't cause clothes to stick to you lol .

Wish there was an easy answer for you but if it helps I am right there with you. The lupus hurts if up running around to much and if I am still to long I feel like the tin man with out oil.

Fibro

I just recently thought of Fibro, my Aunt has it as well. I started having pain in my neck, shoulders, lower back and upper thighs. Almost feels like I pulled a muscle, only hurts when I get up to walk. It was also real tender to touch those spots. I've also had a recent flare in my IBS when these pains were at their worst. A coincidence, probably not. I wake up every morning stiff and sore, the locking up of the knees seem to have subsided, thank the Lord! My eyes are also red and puffy and painful first thing in the morning as well. All and all mornings really suck for me. I am going to bring up the Fibro thing with my rheumy next time I am there. I'd be alright if it weren't for the constant pain.

I have the very same thing, absolutely unbearable. I have just posted about it. Mine is the clutch knee I think through driving but then agaqin the other one goes. The burning is terrible isn't it? I'm still waiting for meds so I don't know if antimalarials will help
