Hi,
just wanted to ask if anyone else gets this and/or if they know the reason why?

I dont drink alcohol often, have done in the past but resently i get this very strange thing that happens.Everyone notices it and seems quiet concerned and i have to reassure them that i'm ok!

With the very first sip of my drink usually vodka and coke, i start to feel my head getting hotter and hotter. This moves down to my fore head and slowly down my face till its bright red like extreme sun burn, extremely hot and slighly swollen. Eventually i end up with small white patches. This goes away in appoximately 15-20mins and feels like i'm sitting in an oven. All this from one sip!

Any one else get this and/or know why it happens or what it is?

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

drinking

nettyunicorn...

I know it's tempting to have the drink... but if you're taking any meds, the combination of meds and alcohol might cause the reaction you're having. You might want to double check the cautions and the dosage of meds you're taking. I konw

Best wishes,
chel

Netty,
It seems that you are having a reaction but to what? It could be the drink and any meds that you are taking or it could be the drink is reacting to something else in you body now. I would advice you to check with a doctor and see what is going on as one sip normally would not do this to a person. You know the saying if it happens when you do this than don't do it lol.

Thanks all, and i will take the tellings off as well. surely 1 or 2 drinks wont hurt, small ones anyway and its not often maybe once every few months.

Will talk to my dr about it, bit worried now as he will probably tell me off too! lol

Thanks

Netty,

I get the hot feeling/redness in my ears even after only a few sips of whatever. I do hope it is not a reaction for you but instead just how you may react to alcohol.

Be careful that this is not a interaction with the drugs/alcohol combo. Let us know how you get along and good luck.

Hi Netty,

What you describe has happened to me ever since I took my first sip of an alcoholic beverage. It happens to my sister too and to all of the women on my father's side of the family. I get slightly enebriated on only one or two sips as well and, interestingly, all of the men in my family and my father's family have substance abuse problems with alcohol being their primary substance. As a social worker, I knew there might be a metabolism issue involved but it always felt like an allergic reaction to me. For many years I couldn't get any answers. Then, when I did my father's medical history in an effort to try to help him, I learned that it was described as an allergic reaction by his mother as well as a sister. Further research revealed that this tends to happen to people who can't metabolize alcohol. Because the alcohol isn't metabolized, it quickly goes straight to the head and then there is an allergic response to something in the alcohol, though opinion varies as to what. Some say one has the allergic reaction with alcoholic drinks containing sulphites only, others say one has the allergic reaction with alcoholic beverages containing yeast only. I and my relatives have the reaction with all forms of alcohol. Hope this helps.

I experience a different kind of skin heat as well which may or may not be related. I seem to have an allergic reaction to my natural skin oils. As my natural skin oils gradually accumulate on my skin and hair after taking a bath or shower, my skin gradually heats up and burns more and more over time until my face is flaming red and my skin feels like it's on fire. My scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and ears will itch more and more until it's unbearable. Only a hot shower with a shampoo containing tea tree oil and menthol (antifungal/antibacterial/antimicrobial) and hypoallergenic body cleanser followed by covering every bit of my skin with a heavy duty body lotion will ease the problem, then it starts all over again. Does anyone else experience this kind of thing?

It certainly feels like an allergic reaction and i do suffer from chronic urticaria but i cant say i get enebriated on one sip, not even one glass.
It is strange that the reaction seems to be getting more dramatic each time so i guess its time not to drink at all and speak to doctor.

Thanks Barb for the info it was very interesting.

Very interesting Barb. I've noticed I get a similar reaction to even small amounts of alcohol at times. My mother does too......gets really stuffed up, nose burns & gets really red rash on her face. I quit drinking it, not worth the hassle. If I want a mixed drink, I order it "virgin" or tell the server I am tired and driving, but would like a drink. They make it so weak you can't even be sure the glass was more than shown the alcohol bottle! Fine by me..... I miss some drinks, but it isn't worth a reaction.

Both my parents have alcoholics in their ancestors. My brother is also an alcoholic/druggie. Burned his brain out on booze and drugs. So, I have been very careful about any substance use.
