Just wondering how long it takes to get your CBC results back from your doctor. Mine are kind of critical because my WBC has been low, I'm severly anemic, and I started Cellcept 3 weeks ago. I know they can process them within 24 hours. I've been getting bloodwork done every 2 weeks now that I'm in a bad flare. The last time I waited and then finally got a report in the mail that told me basically that "white and red blood cells are improving....things are looking better." It is always very vague. There are never any actual numerical values. I would've liked to know what my WBC count was considering it was 0.7 the week before. It had jumped to 2.4 and he didn't even include that in my report. I had to call him to find this out. Is this typical or does your doctor call you and tell you your results? I would like a printout of each level for my files. I will say I've gotten a lot more involved in my own care and I just got all (well, most ) of my medical records sent to me.

if you are 2.4, then you are likely out of the woods, as it is when the wbc drops below 2 that things become worrying. Between 2 and normal is considered low, but much less concerning.

If results are urgent they can do them within an hour - otherwise with CBC's I can usually get the results in about 1 1/2 days.

Have you rung your doctor and asked ?

If your wbc had come up already it sounds like you are on the right treatment

cheers

Laura,

It just depends on the doctor and how he wants to handle things. My husband's insurance is with a very large HMO that have their own doctors, labs, specialists and in some area's their own hospitals. What he gets is a report from the doctor that never states the actual results just if something is positive. If something is urgent then his doctor will call him otherwise it is often 3-4 weeks before he gets anything in the mail.

What you can do is have standing instructions for your lab results to be sent to you with the doctors note on their signficance or request copies after you hear from the doctor. I know that my rheumy has my results in 24 hours except for the Lupus labs that he sends out to a special lab, with those results it takes about a week.

Take care,
Karen

For me (treated at a University hospital with it's own lab) almost all results are available within 24 hours. I am also able to request and receive that actual copy of the lab test results along with the doctors notes/interpretation of the labs. This usually comes within 1-2 weeks of the doctors visit and I can call to get the actual lab numbers earlier if something is of particular concern to me/the doctor. If the doctor sees something concerning I usually get a phone call within 2 days (such as when my U/A showed protein and my GFR was too low/creatinine too high).

It's all automatic - when I check in the secretary asks me if I'd like a copy of labs and doctor's notes and I always say yes. There's nothing more to it than that for me. I feel lucky after reading how difficult it is for some others to get their actual lab test results!
