Hi:

I'm not sure if I should go the the ER or if I'm just a worry wort.

Night before last I was freezing...I mean shaking cold. I took a hot bath and put on warm Jammies and sox, slept with an extra quilt.

Last night, I felt funky...not sure what was wrong, just punky...went to bed at 7:30.

Woke up in the middle of the night feeling sort-of crampy in my back, just below the ribs. As the night progressed it got a bit more uncomfortable kind of a clenching then stabbing, worse on the right than the left.

Today I feel very tired (I have drunk 2 large cups of tea and 40oz of water) and have not peed once - sorry for the graphic there. I am not feeling bloated, nor are my hands or feet swelling more than usual.

Now I feel like I have been kicked in the back, same place just below the rib cage. I know it's not muscular as I can stretch and bend without discomfort.

My kidneys leak protien and RBC's more often than not letely - last test showed +2 protien and much more than trace RBC's, some other bloods were off as well (don't remember what). Rhumy said we'd keep watch and see what to do next - I go for testing every 4 weeks next one is next week.

Should I take myself to the ER and have this checked out, or wait and see if I can see the Rhumy on Monday? I am not a panic person, and have only been to the ER on my own initiative twice, firs time I had a kidney stone and the second time I broke my foot sliding off a step and fractured a couple of bones. Both time I went caus the pain was unbearable.

This isn't the same as the kidney stone...that HURT! This is just uncomfortable, however if this could be a sign of increasing kidney involvement I probably should do something faster...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...I just hate to go when there is not real cause...I don't want to be a hypochondriac or appear that way.

Thanks for your guidance - I don't know what I would do without you guys! You understand exactally how I feel and I don't feel like an idiot asking you all.

Hi Stephanie

Could you have an infection?

I am not an expert but I have stopped passing urine on several occasions and it is considered serious. How long have you gone? I am not familiar with how your medical system works as I am in uk. Last time I stopped passing urine, I swelled right up and was told it places a strain on your heart and should be checked.

I am sure that someone more knowlegeable will be along shortly.

I just wanted to let you know that you are not a hypochondriac.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Stephanie

Im sorry you are going through this. To be honest I wouldnt wait until Monday if I was passing no urine at all :worried:

You could try sitting in a warm bath or running water in the bathroom to try and stimulate the flow and see if that helps.

If you are still unable to pass urine then I think you should go to the ER. I know its an unpleasant prospect but acute urinary retention can be very serious if left untreated. There could be any number of reasons for it Steph but if your bladder is blocked up you need it to be relieved as soon as possible. You certainly wont be treated as a hypochondriac. Urinary retention can be a serious business.

The link below recommends not waiting longer than five hours from the onset of acute urinary retention

Please let us know how you are

Stephanie, If you have someone who can take you to ER I suggest you go. If the bladder gets too full it goes into spasm and then won't be able to empty.
Hope you feel better soon.
Amazing how often things go wrong at a weekend.

Thank you all! I have no bloating or pain in my adomen.

I did manage to urinate a small amount, not nearly what I drank.

I am more worried about the pain in my back (about where I think the kidney is located).

I pput a call into my uncle, who is a Dr and am waiting for him to call me back to determine if I should go to the ER.

Other than being tired and having this "discomfort" I feel OK...so strange.

Thanks again - Stephanie

Sam,
I would say that it would not hurt to go and get checked out. If you have had kidney stones you are more likely to have them again within 5 years of the first one. It is just a fact not sure if you knew or not. It does sound like whatever is going on you could use some relief soon. Wish you the best and keep us updated please.

Good Morning All:

Thanks for your kind responses. We finally decided to call the Doctor last night. He called right back and was very reassuring. He had me drink another 40 oz of water, take some extra pain killers and anti-inflammatories. About 11 PM I finally was able to go...I still have the nagging pain, however he feels its just inflammation of the kidney and is going to set me up with a nephrologist this week.

As to the Kidney stone, I only had one and it was back in 1985, he feels that it probably isn't a stone.

His feeling is that this is all lupus based and its just signs of the kidney involvement, which at this point are still classified as "MILD", since there is no scarring and my numbers are stilll in to lower end of high???

We will persue other courses of action over the next couple of weeks and see what the experts have to say.

Thanks again - Stephanie
