Hi, , started the mxt yesterday only on a low dose to start whilst trying to reduce the steroids...I started on 7.5mg last night, not too bad felt alittle rough this morning but nothing really.followed this with the folic acid tonight as directed by the consultant . tonight I have a lovely red face, neck and chest and feel rather achey...is this quite normal when you start this medication?

Thanks Ellen xxxx

Ellen, To be honest I felt pretty hot, sick and tired each week for a couple of days after metho. It does get less, and within three months I could almost always take the dose with no side effects. Some weeks it would suddenly strike me out of the blue but that no longer happens now. It can take a little bit of determination to stick with it but for me it was very well worth it. I am now on 17.5 mgms with no side effects only benefits.
When I first started I got through the unpleasant bits by drinking water, eating peppermint rock and having a good supply of Library books to take my mine of it.

I wouldn't lie to you and say it was easy but it wasn't unbearable either.
Do make sure you eat a reasonable amount when you take your tablets.
Some people find that a hot oat cereal like Porridge or "Oats so simple" the day after the dose helps.
Thinking of you,

Started metho 3 wks ago...

Dear Silverlady,

I started metho for the first time 3 wks ago. Some side effects I noticed the first two weeks, that got better by the third...
freezing cold fingers (like icicles) that came out of the blue
flushed (red) cheeks at night
sore throat for 12 hrs
eye puffiness (I've noticed this twice in the am since I started over 3 wks ago)
This last week, the symptoms seems less so, though I noticed a nice nose sore. Still, things are better and I am hopeful that they will continue to fade.

Good luck. I know it can take 6-8 wks to take full effect, but I am hopeful as I am seeing some changes for the better after 3 weeks. Hang in there!

Peppermint and ginger are both good for the tummy, though that wasn't one of my symptoms. Take care.

Hi Monica, thanks for the kind words, had my follow up appointment with consultant yesterday, he has stopped the mxt as I was having breathing difficulties and lots of back pain , could be due to the cold I seem to have picked up, found some inflammation in the lungs , but does not want me to continue unless I am well, he has taken more blood and urine samples and put up my steroids and put me on bed rest , was told off for attempting to return to work(can be a bit of a workaholic) so here I am trying to chill and take it easy, until next appointment in a fortnight

Dear Ellen,

Sorry to hear you are feeling sick on top of being sick with lupus! I hope you feel better soon and that you will be able to return to the meds and try again once your cold/virus is gone. Hang in there! Rest and take good care of yourself.

Dear Ellen,
I am glad you have been taken off it while you have your cold.
If you do start back on it and you are prone to colds or chest infections I would strongly advise you to see the Doc. always at the first sign. I have found I have to do this even if it feels like I am fussing, because if not it goes to my chest and takes weeks to get right. This is not too much of a downside because Doctors have always been understanding about the need for me to take care. It doesn't happen often. I would say about six infections of different types in five years, so don't live in dread of it. Just something for you to be aware of.

Hope the cold goes soon, I feel like telling you off for worrying about work, but I have the comparative luxury of being permanently Disabled so that is one worry I don't have-and I am grateful!
You know what to do, plenty of fluids, chill out, watch some really trashy TV!

Ellen, You sound a little more cheerful. Yes, some of the television is just compulsively awful watching isn't it. I don't watch much but Immi (my Daughter) and I are poor sleepers and it is not unknown for us to watch dreadful night time TV., recently we were really wicked and even ate chip sandwiches at the same time!

Have you ever considered one of those Postal DVD rental schemes? We did that for a while, they are not expensive and you can keep the DVDs as long as you like. Easy to pop them in the post to return them too.

I found it cheaper than getting them from local shop, not watching them on time and ending up paying a fine.

PS Do you enjoy living in Cheshire? My Husband spent time there as a boy and loved it.

Lola, its a lovely place, the countryside is beautiful,I live on the ouskirts of a town which is in need of a facelift...maybe one day.
There are some lovely old country houses close by that are open to the public, with beautiful gardens and lovely surroundings.

Thank you i am feeling a lot more like my old self rather than the messed up person I was last week...you all helped..thank you.

Could just eat one of those wicked sandwiches ,but I have had my fill of daytime tv and am going to go back to work on Thurs and see hoe I go taking it easy...

Hugs and well wishes for your good health
