Hi all,

As some of you know I've been having a flare since the New Year, it's still going on but the main thing bothering me is pain in both my knees.

This has only started in the last few days. It's not the joint but the tissue around it going 4 inches above and below the knee. It's like someone keeps hitting me with a baseball bat. The left leg is more affected than the right and when I stand I have a strange dragging feeling in the knee cap.

There is no swelling or redness but the tissue is tender to touch. It's waking me at night and I can hardly move my knee. The Naproxen is only taking the edge off it and I'm not walking properly.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this, I'd be grateful for any advice as it really is getting me down.

Hubby was at the doc yesterday and happened to see my GP - Hubby told him how I was feeling and that I was trying to avoid going on steroids. The doc said they could think about injecting into the muscle. Is this steroid injections? I don't know how I feel about that as the pain is over such a general area. Funny thing was that although the appointment was for him they spent most of it talking about me :lol: . Hubby hadn't even sat down and the doc said 'So how is she doing?'. I was secretly quite chuffed. Just as well Hubby wasn't in for anything serious. :wink2:

I am coming on a bit late. I am sorry about your pain. As far as I know an injection usually would contain some sort of a steroid mixture with an anti inflammatory/anethestic. This is not the same exact type of steroid we take orally though. I am drawing a blank on the name. The side effects are usually minimal.
My hubby has been having knee issues and his acl is torn and he had an injection just to help until he can get the surgery needed and it helped a little bit, but not entirely. I don't remember if you have Fibromyalgia, but it could be something like that-that is causing you such pain, since it is in the tissue and not in the joint. I wish I could offer you some better advice.

Me too I'm late, but just wanted to mention that I have had an intramuscular steroid injection in my butt for thigh pain and it helped a lot, it didnt last more than a couple of weeks but it really took the edge off until I was out of that acute flaring stage. Didnt hurt, they are nothing like joint injections but for me at least it was worth it and obviously the right thing to do.

I really appreciate your replies. I'm still experiencing the pain though not as constant as it was. I've gone back to accupuncture which is beginning to help.

Becca - I don't have Fibro, my doc just thinks it's myalgia as part of the lupus.

I think I may have to bite the bullet and go for the injections just to get me over the worst of this.

go for the injection i go every couple of months for them in my hips i have bursitis i am going to get one done this week thy put ansthetice in along with it mines takes a couple of days to kick in but what a diffrence it makes never had one in my knee but had accupuncture in left one that helped hope you feel better soon from one scot to another elisabethm

Dear Pam,

I don't know if this is the same, but I have had pain in my knees and shoulders. My orthopedic surgeon has gave me injections into the soft tissue. They were cortisone shots, What they did was take away the pain, I have bursitis in both shoulders and Necrosis in both knees. It sure got me through all that pain, it lasted for 3 weeks for me, but everyone is different as to how long the shots last. If it is the same thing your doctor is suggesting, I say go for it too.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going for accupuncture tomorrow so I'm going to see how that goes, if there is no improvement then I will go and see about the injections. I tend to put off the inevitable for as long as possible. :hehe:

Elisabeth - I hope you feel the benefit soon. I've had similar injections before so I know how painful they can be initially. :hug:

I went for accupuncture today and mentioned the knee pain to my physio. On examination she found the left knee was definately the most affected and was quite hot.

She also found that my hamstring had shortened slightly due to me protecting it too much. I've also been sitting with a pillow under my knees at night which she said was also a no no!

She gave me some laser therapy before the accupuncture which we will repeat next week. I've also got some gentle stretching to do every day. Otherwise she recommended the injections.

Only wish I'd shaved my legs before I went and wasn't wearing Hubby's sports socks! Classy chick or what..........:lol:

LoopyLou,

Ouch!! I hate the fact that you are experiencing knee pain. I know that would hurt alot, as my daughter tore up her knee prior to getting pregnant. I have some kne pain but it sounds minimal to yours!

Anyway, I get my elbows injected every three months, thank goodness. Sometimes, I cannot wait out the three months and I have to push the time frame and get it sooner. Anyway, I am also having a lupie brain moment and cannot remember the name of the shot. I used to get Gold shots in my hips as a child but I do not know if they, but it is always worth asking.

Talk to your Rheumy and ask about the situation or a referral to a Orthopedist until then, take a deep breath and try and relax as best as you can.

One other thought, you mght try ice and heat, rotating them every 20- 30 minutes.
