:rolleyes:My rheumy is thinking about adding methetrexate to the plaquinel I currently take. Is anyone on this same combination? Has it helped? What side effects have you experienced? Can you tell me anything about your experience on the two?

hey Bernie,

I used to take methotrexate(15mg a week) and plaquenil (400mg daily) until very recently. People usually continue taking plaquenil, and then the other dmards are added to it. I found mtx really excellent for joint pain/fatigue/brain fog/pleurisy. it really is an effective drug. However some people (ie me!) experience side effects. luckily you only take it once a week so you only feel rotten one or two days after if you're going to feel rotten at all, and thats like nausea/headache/sleepy/tummy upset. With most people the side effects go after a few months. Its definately not a worry taking it with plaquenil. Good luck I hope it works for you! xxx

I am on 400 mg. Plaq. daily and .7 MTX injections once a week. I used to be on 20 mg. of the pills but they weren't effective enough so I was switched to the injections which really give you more "bang for the buck." It works very well and I really feel it if I'm even a day late taking it but since it causes nasty blisters on my face I'm hoping to get off of it after the Imuran kicks in. It's very common to add MTX to Plaq. because the two drugs together are much more effective than either one alone. It's a God-send for many people. I hope it helps you as well.

I have been on 400mg of Plaquenil daily for about 15 months however my lupus is becoming more active with inflamation and chronic joint pain.

I have been put onto Prednisilone a few weeks ago, firstly by GP 25mg daily then 12 1/2 mg daily for a trial (did not sleep at all). But last week my Rheumy put me on 5 mg daily as a long term treatment, cut my Plaquenil down to 200mg daily. And added Methotrexrate 10 mg weekly, I took it for the first time last night after dinner as I had to wait to get over a sinus infection first.

So far no nasty side effects, what a relief. Still not sleeping the best with the prednisolone (whacky dreams and waking often) but better than the higher dose thats for sure. My inflamation and pain has almost disappeared completely now, and I even went on a 3 hour horse ride yesterday. Yay!

Good Luck Bernie

Hi Bernie! I've been on plaquenil for a long time. Started on metho about 3 mos ago. It seems to help my fatigue. I've had other stuff going on (major foot surgery), so I can't judge the joint pain. But, I've heard that metho helps alot of people. I have loss of appetite from it, which I consider a bonus! Hope you do well with it.Cathy:)
