minocin or minocycline is bad!!! I was taking it for about 2 years for acne. My father had lupus ---SLE, so I have the genes for it. After about a year and a half I started getting severe migraines and was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy. Later, I had a number of lab tests come back abnomral (ANA, NDNA, ant-smith, RPR, von wildebrand... everything) I was having pain so severe in my thumbs and my right shoulder my doctor prescreibed my oxycodone. Since I am a nurse, I was pretty sure I had SLE, like my dad. I was about to get an appointment with my dad's Rheumatologist and at the initial appoinment we went through everything--- meds, labs, biopsy results, MRI results etc. As soon as I told him i was taking minocin, the rheumatologist said "oh, no, no, no". He immediately discontinued my minocin and put my on doxycycline--- same class of meds but not the lupus like side effects. The rheum. said that no one with SLE or any genetic predisposing factors or any chance of getting lupus should take minocin because it can mimic or even activate lupus. He scheduled follow up appointments for several months and my lab results returned to normal after probably 4 months. I no longer have migraines or nerve pain and labs are still normal :)

Welcome Laura,

I'm not sure that you'll get a reply to this thread as it is very old (2008 ).

Your experience is very interesting though so, if you wanted to, it would be a nice idea to perhaps write it down for us in a thread of your own. Perhaps entitled something like "DILE (Drug induced lupus erythematosus) and minocycline". It could be of help to others searching for info on that.

I'm glad to hear that you are doing so well now and sincerely hope it stays that way for you :)
