Hi all,
i would firstly like to wish you all a pain free day!:)

Right now to the question.
* I woke yesterday with a my lips covered in horrid, huge and sore cold sores blisters. My mouth is swollen and itchy and a little numb at the same time.
I have suffered with these for many years on and off and have learned to cope with them. I must admit this time i'm a bit more concern as eye is a little swollen and itchy too. I think my resent tooth absess(infection) has caused this but it is a bad flare of them!

What intrigues me is could these horrible bouts have anything to do with Lupus! "Doh be clear Netty!"

* I would be interested to know if many of you suffer from really nasty cold sore flares! I have never associated them with it but i have not met anyone else that gets them as bad as me! I'm sure thats not the case but i have never met anyone!

*Could it be my immune system freaking out and not coping.

Sorry i cant express myself well but i hope you get the gist of my post!:rotfl:

Thank you

Netty from Devon uk!xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Netty,

I do not get cold sores but I do get mouth and nose ulcers. My husband gets cold sores all the time so this is how I know mine are NOT cold sores.

I do not know if this is from Lupus or not. I know someone with more knowledge will be along to enlighten you but I am sorry your dealing with this. It can be painful and makes eating a hard task at times.

Let us know how you get along.:wink2:

Hi Netty,

Thank you for the pain free day wish even though you are not having one. Sorry to hear you are having such a bad flare up of sores. I hope they don't last long.

The last time I had oral surgery done I broke out in a mass of mouth sores. I have never had them on the lips though. I think the stress of the surgery itself may have started the flare up. Fortunately the salt water rinses I had to do for the surgery helped with the sores also.

Take care,
Lazylegs

Hi Netty,

I do break out with batches of cold sores. Often, it is a prelude to a flare, in my case. I have had breakouts with coldsores, on my lips around my mouth, and under my nose, since my teen years. It is from the Herpes virus, and is very contagious. My mother had them, and assume that is were I was introduced to the virus.

Changing towels often (hand towels) will help keep the virus from spreading to other family members.

I also, get the lupus related mucosal sores in my nose and in my mouth. Those are different that the cold sores you are referring too.

It's just my opinion, but yes, I believe getting the cold sores, is an indicator our immune system is going wacky..

I am sorry, you suffer with these painful sores. I know they itch first, and then, hurt.

You can buy Abreva here in the States, which shortens the time of outbreak in half. Also, you could have your dr. prescribe Zovirex cream, which does the same...and works very well.

I hope they clear up fast for you..Best wishes.

Love,
Sandy

Oh boy, do I know about cold sores. My first memory of them is age five. There's a lovely one on my kindergarden picture. I've been plagued by them off and on my whole life, but for the past several years I was able to keep them under control very well by taking a prescription drug (acyclovir) at the first sign of an itch or tingle. It knocks it right out if you take it early enough and for a few days, but will only shorten it if you take it when the sore has already taken hold. A few months ago they went out of control again because of the drugs I take for the lupus and SJS. Anything that suppresses your immune system (certain drugs, stress, the sun) and for some women, their monthly periods, can cause a cold sore flare. Once the MTX kicked in, I felt better but now I have constant cold sores. I'm now taking acyclovir 2-3 times a day to keep them under control until I can wean off of the MTX. I'm hoping (praying) the Imuran won't cause them like the MTX does. I really don't want to take acyclovir for the rest of my life.

Are you on any medication to suppress your immune system? That could definitely be the cause of your problem. Believe me, I feel your pain.
