Hello All!

I haven't posted in such a long time, but of course, being Christmas, things can go downhill with me. I had a burning feeling on the roof of my mouth and thought I had "burnt" my mouth. It has not gone away and I was at the dentist today and he said it looked inflammed and very tender. Could this be a mouth ulcer? Could this be Lupus related, if so, any quick remedies? It has been quite sore and bothersome with hot/spicy food. I have a call in to my Rhuemy, so I hope this gets resolved before Christmas. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Judy,

I always use a salt water rinse a few times a day when I get any inflammation in my mouth. Also avoid those spicy or acidic foods. Hopefully it doesn't last too long.

Take care,

try taking 1 mg of folic acid a day. Usually that is for people taking methotrexate but I have found it can help - and it won't hurt you even if it isn't what you need.

Hi Judy

Im with Breanne on this one. I use a salt and water rinse when my mouth gets sore. I find it gives almost instant relief and stops the stinging for a while. Its also very handy and can be used as often as you llike alongside any medications/mouth washes.

The other thing I use is Bonjela but I find it hard to apply in certain parts of my mouth because it's a very slippery consistency and it sometimes just rolls around in a big clump. ;)

Your Rheumy might be able to give you a mouth wash or spray if it gets much worse. I sometimes use a product called Difflam Spray but Im not sure if its available where you are.

You have my sympathy. Im bothered by a sore mouth myself at the moment.

Luv n stuff

Howdy Judy,
I think I have had every possible version of mouth sores with the SLE, all sizes, every location, lots of colours and every one *miserable*.
Long ago I used something called "essence of caroid" but the last time I asked a pharmacist about it I received a look that implied I must be old enough to have sailed on Noah's ark, probably steerage. Something called "sore mouth medicine" seems the same. Salt in water helps too but the only cure I know of is time.
All the best for a healthy 2009.
