New Dentist Question

I feel a certain type of way regarding this, just want some professional feedback.
I recently got a new healthcare plan as I turned 26 and got a new job with pretty decent coverage. I needed to find a dentist where I now live as I'm off my parent's insurance plan and no longer live with them.
I went to the same hygienist for 17 years. No issues, no aesthetic dentistry, no repair work. I go to this new dentist, and the first appointment I see they say I have 2 cavities and need to pay whatever the cost...which is fine. It's only 2 cavities that are not too deep.
The part that annoys me is the first time I go into your office you find additional work that needs to be done and pay additional costs.
Is this common practice to find work to be done when it's not necessary? Should I get another opinion? My brushing consistency/flossing/smoking hasn't changed, if not gotten better in the past couple of years. I just want to know if maybe they are sheisty or swindling me. I obviously know they know way more about my teeth than they do. My hesitation with the fillings is that they are permanent.

Hi Patrick,

My daughter is a dental hygienist. She recently switched offices taking over for a long term employee. She was shocked by the things this person had missed. A few of these patients were worse than some of the patients in the periodontist office she works at. It appears the person just went through the cleaning motions and never pointed out potential problems to the dentist. The dentist should have caught these things during his exam or on the x-rays so both were at fault.

Yours may not be a similar case but if the x-ray is showing decay the sooner you take care of it the better. The simple cost of a filling is nothing compared to a crown or root canal later. The filling is meant to last a long time in hopes of no further decay in that area. The decay may have just been caught but it didn't just happen overnight. It has been developing for a bit.

When someone has Lupus it is important to keep up on dental care. We are more at risk for developing dry mouth both from the disease itself and the medications we take. Periodontal risks are also higher along with issues of the temporo-mandibular joint (the jaw). There are many posts about these things on the forum if you care to look them up.

Take care,
Lazylegs
