Hi,

I saw my rhumey last Friday.
My pain has increased since I last saw him. My GP put me on Oxycontin. That has helped but I do have break threw pain.

My rhumey talked to me about methotrexate. We decided this was the route for me. He found 8 different places that was swollen and very painful.:( I had a chest x-ray, labs taken. Next week I am to have a TB test. I go back to him in 7 weeks.

Here is my problem. My handicapped daughter had the influenza this week.(reason why I havn't visited the site this week) She ran a low grade temp up to 103.:( I have been having a sore throat for the last two days. So should I wait to make sure that I don't get a cold and make sure I don't get what my daughter had?

Do you also stop taking it when you get sick? It was a late Friday afternoon appointment. I never think of all the questions until I leave the appointment.:ermm: I will call my rhumey on Monday. I thought I would ask you guys in the mean time what you do when you are on methotrexate when you get sick.

I am thinking I will start it next Friday night. That way my hubby can be around to watch how I react to this new med. I am hoping and praying that I adjust to it without any problems.:fingers:

Thank you in advance for your replies. I am kinda of a chicken about starting this med too.

Take care,
Lyn

Hi Lyn,

I'm sorry you are feeling so unwell at the moment. I also hope that you don't catch the flu from your daughter.

You've decided wisely I think to wait until after you can check with your rheumy about infections and methotrexate. I don't take it so have no advice or experience to pass on, but it seems good sense to wait until after the weekend when your doc is available, and all sercives are running normally.

I hope that it gives you few problems and lots of symptom relief:blush:

In your position, I would do the same thing. Wait until next friday and ask my doctor the questions I had before starting it.

I am hopeful for you that you will not catch the flu from your daughter if you've had a sore throat for a few days now and are not much worse. I had the flu twice in my 20s, and I had just 1 day or less of sore throat before high fever and that feeling of being run over by a mack truck which then parks on top of you sort of feeling ;)

Good luck and hope the methotrexate helps you a bunch!

I am not sure about the medicine but would call doctor as you plan and talk to them. It maybe nothing but that is better than waiting and wishing you had called later. You could also ask you pharm. about taking the new med when sick and see what they say. I don't blame you for wanting to know all you can before taking a new med. You will never know unless you start it if that is the one that will help or hurt. My fingers are crossed for you and a little prayer might not hurt so there will be a spot for you tonight with me.
Hoping you feel better soon,
Tammy

Hello Lyn
Your plan sounds good to me too. Most people wait until the weekend to take methotrexate - other drugs too when they aren't quite sure of the side effects, effect on their weekday lives.

I hope your daughter is well on the mend now I should think you'll know by next weekend if you have the flu or not and I hope the chest issues turn out OK. It's good that he is checking this out.
Don't forget to ask him for the future if you should miss a dose if you are unwell. The folic acid isn't taken on the day you take the metho but apart from that prescribing habits when to take it differ from doc to doc. Some say not on the day after either so you might need to check that out with him

Many hugs

Hi Lyn

I just wanted to wish you the very best of luck starting methotrexate. Im also a chicken when it comes to starting new meds and Im pretty sure we are not alone in feeling this way.

Starting a drug like metho is serious business and you have every right to be cautious and nervous. I hope that it does help to relieve your pain and inflammation though - after all that is the goal of treatment.

Let us know how you are and Im praying that the flu will fly over your head and not rest anywhere near you

I would be interested to hear how you are getting along with the metho and the very best of luck this weekend.

Take good care

Thank you Cath, Tammy,Clare, Joan & Sandy.:grouphug2:

I called my rhumey today. This is what I found out..... Do not take methotrexate if I am sick, skip the dose.
I am to take the follic acid 7 days a week. But on the day I take the methotrexate, do not take the follic acid the same time I take the methotrexate. I will take the follic acid with the morning pills and the metho at evening meal.

Clare, the chest x-ray was something the rhumey does when he puts a patient on methotrexate. It is really great to have such a good rhumey. His nurse calls me back the same day I call.

We ended up take our daughter to the ER Sunday afternoon. Her face is broke out in cold sores.:( Her temp has been going up today. It was 102 this morning and now is 98.1 tonight.

Thank you for all your advice, prayers, and support you have given me. :)

Take care,
Lyn

taking metho in the weekend is a good plan as it can make you feel sick for a few days, so it is good to have someone else around to care for your daughter.

I never could tolerate it and got sick of feeling sick for 2-3 days after each dose, so metho didn't work for me.

hope you have better luck with it

Thank you Tammy, Lin & Raglet.:grouphug2:

I didn't start methotrexate tonight. Our daughter is still sick.
Not knowing how I will be affected by metho and with DD sick, I cant take the chance of getting ill. I need my strength to help take care of her.

Thank you for all your support, I really appreciate it.

Love,
Lyn
