i have been taking omeprazole for my stomach issues and the doc said to stop taking it now that i have not had any problems for a few weeks so i did.......2 days ago and guess what.......i wake up this morning with painful heartburn type pain?

sometimes it feels like you turn a corner only to head straight into another brick wall.

i know a few people here take omeprazole so what i would like to know is:

how long have you been taking it for?

how long CAN you take it for?

have you experienced any problems taking it.

(i used to get an acid stomach occasionally linked to my cycle but since being dx and starting on plaquenil this has stepped up a pace and became more frequent and problematic)

Hi Chilli,

I can't say how long one can take omeprazole for. I think some people are on it long term but here, in Belgium, it isn't reimbursed unless you have "proof" from and endoscopy of problems.

Although I had very severe heartburn issues when starting my meds, nothing showed on the endoscopy.

In the end I was able to find what in my diet was causing it. In fact I suffer from mild gastroparesis and when I flare it gets worse. I cut out all caffeine products (including tea with caffeine) and stopped eating bread, as bread is digested very very slowly and my main problem was that the stomach wasn't emptying fast enough. In the beginning I also found a medication called "Motillium" (or domperidone - usually prescribed for nausea and upset stomachs) very beneficial as it helps empty the stomach.

After a while I was even able to cut out the motillium but I still don't drink tea with caffeine or eat bread.

Just a few ideas as you may be able to look up what foods worsen heartburn and find out a way to help yourself that way.

I now have no problems apart from a very slight thing from time to time, usually afer eating something I shouldn't. Fatty foods don't help eother by the way :)

ive been on it for over 3 yrs,and now on 40mg emeprozel (sp) but have problems with GERD too, so i guess you can be on it long term, but all the medication you are taking dont help either.

as to weather you can have it long term yes you can, if you warent it for certain reasons..

I take it too.
Nothing showed up on my endoscopy but I take it to limit the effect of the steroids on my stomach. Also the occasional anti inflammatory.
I changed to it from Lanzaprosole as that seemed to give me stomach pains.
Hope you get sorted soon.

Like Katherine, I take it when i am taking anti-inflammatories.

I have it on repeat prescription and have been for about 1 year now, but i do not have to collect it every month. I only take my anti-inflammatories when I am flaring, but then I take them, and the omeprazole, religeously. Omeprazole once a day, anti-inflammatories 2 - 3 times a day.

Hope you get sorted out quickly.

Hi Chilli :hello: :flowery: :hello:

I have taken omeprazole for about 3 years now, i used to have constant heartburn, i was drinking gaviscon by the bottle.

When i was put on omeprazole i only took it for 2 days and the heartburn disappeared, i can tell within a good few hours if i have missed taking it, cos the heartburn comes back.

I am not sure if there is a time limit to someone taking omeprazole but trust me i will fight to the end if they try to take me off it.

I hope you get things sorted quickly cos heartburn is awful.

Take care  Jo

Chilli,

There are a lot of different stomach meds on the market. Some work better than others for some people and then some just work better with different meds.

I have been on Nexium and it worked great, until insurance wouldn't pay for it. I then went to Prilsec and then insurance said no again. So now I am on Zantac aka Rantidine and it takes care of the problem. I have taken it for the last two years everyday and have been told by my good doc to continue to do so.

To be honest I have never totally checked into all of the different stomach medications but some of them take care of the problem then once it is gone, it then protects your stomach so it doesn't happen again. It would definately be a good idea to talk to your doc and see what he wants you to do. If you are prone to have these problems, it might be a good idea to discuss it at length. He may want to send you to a GI doc which will be able to possibly be more in depth.

Good luck,
Nancy

I was on it for years - I couldn't stop taking it as my stomach problems are caused by the meds I take for my lupus, and I can't stop taking them. So I was definitely "stuck" on omeprazole.

I have since switched to solox, and that suits me a lot better as it is SR, but I will have to stay on these types of meds as long as I am on the rest of my meds.

hope you get your tummy problems sorted soon

Hi,

I've been on it for about 6 months, I had a gastric episode while on Pred and my entire gastric system shut down ( lower end too, sorry), so I was told to take it for 2-3 months. When I tried to go off for a few days heartburn was back big time so I was given refills. Saw my PCP last week and was told I'll "be on it daily as long was I'm on the Mobic and pred". As Mobic is the only anti-inflam that works for me (we've tried them all), I'll be on until they do body transplants.:hehe:

Hope this helped,

Michelle

Hi

I have taken esomeprazole (nexium) on and off for about 4-5 years now (cant precisely remember, my brains done a runner lol!).

Depending on the gastric symptoms Im take between 20mg and 80mg a day in split doses as advised by my gastroenterologist.

I have been really lucky and come off it for weeks at a time and then something happens to my digestive tract and I take it again and it usually starts working within 20-36hrs.

When I last saw my specialist, he said that I should try to stay off it as much as possible because it does interfere with the acid levels in your stomach and can make it lazy (?) so I took his advice and when I felt I was able to drop it, that is precisely what I did with no ill effect.

However, as I have said, when I have gastric problems due to steroids, or other meds, they I take it until it settles down again.

I always carry a couple around with me with all my other meds so I can take one if I need to upto my recommended dose.

However, because of my low bone density and steroid use the tried me on a once a month bisphosphonate which I took twice and NEVER again because the pain, burning, gerd was HORRENDOUS. I then had to take 40mg morning and night for a week to calm my tum down, as well as domperidone before I ate as it wass like swallowng stones but thankfully it is all settling back down again.

Oh by the way, esomeprazole is the newer sister of omeprazole and when I have been in hospital locally and St Thomas, London, they dont carry it as stock so I have to ensure my husband brings it in with him as the stress of hospital always triggers it off.

This drug has really been a huge bonus to my life and I wouldnt be without it!

Hope that helps.

Hugs

Julia

thank you all for your replies.....at least i know i am not the only one (in a sort of misery loves company kinda way!!!!)

i dont want to tempt fate but apart from that initial episode i have not had any problems with heartburn pain, just a little reflux (touch wood).

my dr, doesnt want me to take omeprazole for any longer than i need it and to be honest i am sick to death of taking meds. i have gone from taking the odd paracetamol for a hangover to having a drugs box!!! mercifully i have tapered off all the pain meds.....they dont really help.

i hope my stomach issues have settled down for a while at least.........but thank you all for replying...
