I have today had to book a flight to Vancouver leaving thursday 7th . Thinking I was covered re insurance I now realise my premium only covers Europe.

This is a one off flight as my dad has suffered a massive heart attack ( I met him for the first time about 10 years ago)

Anyone found a one off weeks insurance that is cheap.

I can ring round but thought I would put the question out there first.

Thanks
Nicky

Hello Nicky

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad but can't help with the insurance. You current insurers would seem the obvious place to start. If you have to mention the lupus as you might, make sure to emphasise that there is no organ involvement.

Ask the airline if you can get a discount for family emergency.

Good Luck- it sounds as if it will be very stressful and tiring.

Hi Nicky,

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad, it sounds like a very difficult situation for you.

If you can't get your currrent insurers to extend the coverage then try Freedom Insurance - http://www.freedominsure.co.uk/. I found them very helpful and I know some other members here have used them successfully too, they also specialise in pre-existing conditions. If they can't get the documents out to you in time they can email them to you.

I hope everything goes well with the trip. It's going to be a very emotional and draining time with a long flight and jetlag thrown in so please look after yourself and rest when you can. Is someone else going with you?

I'll be thinking of you.

Thanks Pam I have just purchased a weeks insurance for 53.00 pounds , I could have got it cheaper by 20.00 but only if I excluded my lupus diagnosis and it wasnt worth that for peace of mind.

Clarie I did ask re the discount but I am flying with the one airline Zoom who do not offer that. The other airlines I am told do offer a discount in a family emergency. ( Im wondering how one proves it tho).

Lin/Karen/Bigsis Thanks for your help and kind words they are appreciated.

Hi Nicky,

I am so glad you got the insurance, they are a good company to use and it's not worth excluding the lupus for the sake of £20.

I've been thinking about you - we're all here for you Nicky if you need us at any time.

Hi Nicky
I assume you did the the insurance through Freedom, for future info.

To get the family emergency cut price you have to show a letter from a doctor certifying the illness and actual hospitalisation. Other airlines might have different requirements.

When my brother died in the USA we got 50% refund after sending the death certificate but had to pay full price upfront. For the outward flight they upgraded us too since that was at very short notice, those were the only 5 seats available on that flight and the only flight with 5 seats available Presumably they were unlikely to sell those seats at that point. I think that
was about £2.500 saving.

While on this sort of topic, I once had to change return dates several times on a non changeable ticket. The first time I paid the surcharge for a change but then I would have had to make a whole new booking. I explained the situation to the airline concerned, Virgin, that I couldn't be quite sure when I would be able to return because of the unpredictability of my mother's illness. They agreed to extend the validity of the ticket as often as I liked without further charges, if I produced a GP letter as proof of the circumstances.
As it happened they actually upgraded me when I did eventually make the return flight as a special courtesy. There's service !

:)

Hi Claire

Yes it was Freedom Insurance and I received a first class delivery of policy the very next day. Had it not arrived in time they would email me the policy. All in all a very efficient service.

I'm thinking that in hindsight I would have rather booked with a bettr known airline and forgone the cheaper initial cutprice ticket to have peace of mind.
Although I may be able to change my details at short notice, somehow the well known airlines seem to accommodate one more perhaps. Though I have been told by one person here in Vancouver that they were good.

Anyway I am sitting in Family Critical Care Room playing the waiting game which is eternal.

I have bought 6 books to read and left all of them at the house in Vancouver.

I have my half bother snoring on the couch and my dads wife who is lovely reading on the exceedingly comfortable couch.

From a lupus point of view Im doing well.
Just wish I could go to the loo once in two days!!.

All the best.

Hi All

I have been back for a while now but have been content to hover....

I need to write a whole thread on life experiences, flight delays, and the paradox of how lupus has effected me personally throughout those experiences.

Will write sometime soon and look forward to receiving your pearls of input.

Lots of love
