I have a hugh problem taking the Plaq, it really, really breaks my mouth out worse than it already is. My Rheumy is upset cause I take it awhile and quit and always the same thing other than the well-known gas, bloating, diahreah, and or constapation. I am just so depressed over this. Can Mepacrine perhaps help me ? Can I get it in Oklahoma? USA

I'm really tired of all this, I mean just totally angry because my body just is gone to &%(!

I have been over taking my pain meds, bad I know, everyone's mad with me over that. Somehow I just seem to give up on ever being able to eat a meal that doesn't just tear my mouth all to heck and even the taste, unless it's hot, has left me.

Can I just take the Mepacrine without the Plaquinil (sp?)

Thanks for your replys in advance
I'm not crazy yet but getting there:sad:

I am allergic to Plaquenil so I take mepacrine instead. I am in the Uk, so I know it is different for you.As far as I know you can get it but the name is different.
It is a good med. especially if you have skin problems.

Hi,

If I remember rightly there was another U.S. member on here recently who did manage to find a pharmacy that could supply mepacrine. I might be wrong but if it is the case, I'm sure they'll be along soon.

I hope it works out for you,

Thank you so very much for the information. I will ask my rheumy if he will let me try it instead of the plaq, I'm just about beside myself trying to take even 1 per day. I do have alot of problems with my skin, mainly sun related.

God bless

Hello annada

I think you will need specialist advice on this because of the oral Lichen Planus, a dermatologist probably.
Mepacrine is called Quinacrine in the USA

One site says LP can be caused by medications such as Quinine, Quinidone and Quinacrine but another says it can be treated with Plaquenil.
I don't know what to make of that but I seem to remember reading that Plaquenil needs to be used carefully in cases of LP and also that a rare side effect of Quinacrine can be Lichen Planus.

Quinacrine is readily available from compounding pharmacies in the USA. I used one in CA, postal delivery, but in NYC there was an independent pharmacy near me that compounded.

These side effects situations are very frustrating and the mouth sores awful to live with. Maybe you would do better going on to Imuran/azathioprine especially if that's ever used for LP too. Does Prednisone help the LP ?

All the best I hope you can get some relief soon
