Does anyone who has lupus or is suspecting a lupus diagnosis have chronic ringing in the ears? I've had it daily since 2001. I notice it can happen with lupus meds, but I'm not on any and haven't been diagnosed with lupus, just suspecting it. Just curious if anyone has had this prior to their diagnosis/treatment and believe it is one of their lupus symptoms.

Hey Lily80

I do get tinnitus but also have some bad dizzy spells to, and I still have no idea why as the ENT specialist could not find anything on hearing tests or MRI, so I have put it down to one of those things!

There are many reasons you could have tinnitus so might be an idea to discuss this with your doctor next time you see him / her.

Hope you find some answers.

I have had loud, roaring tinnitus in my left ear for about 10 years, ever since I lost the hearing in that ear. Almost one year ago I started getting a quiet ringing in my hearing ear, which freaked me out big time. The rheumy thinks it's related to either lupus or Sjogren's syndrome and the audiologist has told me hearing loss is common in Sjogren's, so I'm not sure what's going on. I'm hoping for the best. There's no way to know for sure what's causing your particluar problem. ENTs just don't know much about it. It could be related to a lupus type problem, or not at all. Some people are helped by cutting down on their salt intake. It's worth a try.

Hi Lily,

Are you on anti-inflammatories? It's quite common with them. Other than that there are many reasons, but if it persists then I would get it checked out.

Hi Lily, No, I have never had the ringing in my ears, but I would certainly
tell my Dr. right away, as it can mean several things. Is there a reason that you think you might have Lupus? If there is, make a list of all your symptoms, and keep it up to date, so you will have it for your Rheumatologist appointment, if you
decide to make one. I wish you well.

I really don't know if it's Lupus related because I had it before I was diagnosed - but like with everything I don't know how long I have had Lupus because alot of my symptoms have been happening for years........

jacquip, the last time I saw an ENT about my tinnitus problem, he offered an antidepressant. I told him I'm not depressed, I just want the noises in my ears to stop! Apparently antidepressants are helpful for some people. I'm not sure if it really stops the ringing or if it just makes it so you still hear it, but you just don't care. I suspect it's the latter. Anyway, I declined the offer of yet another drug to put into my system. I've learned that the body is amazingly resiliant. I hardly notice the constant, loud noises in my left ear anymore and I've adjusted to the new noise in my hearing ear as well. After a while, I just got used to it. I'd still prefer to have no noise at all, of course, but it's much better than popping another pill, in my opinion.

I suspect I have lupus or fibromyaglia but my doctor is being a waste of time at the moment to believe me!! I started with dizzy spells about 10 years ago & then tinnitus in both ears about 4 years ago. I have constant ringing in both ears but dont notice it much at work due to the humming of the computers - mine has seemed to of gotten worse in the last couple of months though. From what I have researched on the internet tinnitus does seem to relate to lupus - sorry I dont know why but there are plenty of websites if you do a search on google for it. I'm also not on any medication or wasnt when it started. I have recently been on antidepressents for 4 months but it didnt make the ringing any easier.

I have this on and off in only one ear and this has gone on since 2003 after a fall at work and hitting my head.

It waxes and wanes but when it is there it is annoying.

I don't know what a doctor can do for it.

Sometimes I will put a ear plug in to quiet it down.

Hi again,

If it's not due to NSAIDS or some other obvious cause then I suggest a visit to an ENT to help diagnose it. There is an autoimmune disease that causes this called Meniere's Disease, which comes with dizziness and vertigo and eventually hearing loss. It has nothing to do with Lupus, but of course there are a probably a few Lupus patients who also have Meniere's.

There is also such a thing as Autoimmune Hearing Loss (sensorineural hearing loss in autoimmune disease) which can occur with RA, Lupus etc.which the following article explains.............ringing in ears is but one symptom.

http://autoimmunedisease.suite101.com/article.cfm/autoimmune_hearing_loss

Having Lupus does not mean we don't get other ailments, unfortunately.

Thanks for all the input.

In response to some of the questions..

I saw an Ear, Nose, Throat dr. years ago, hearing is fine, so he wasn't concerned.
I'm not on any meds that would cause it. I've had it in both ears since May of 2001...hasn't ever stopped.

It's one of the least troubling of my many symptoms, but its still annoying as heck. It was one of my first of my many now chronic health problems that I can't get a diagnosis for. :(

Since you saw a ENT years ago maybe it is time to go back and see one again.

I read the link that Lily posted......interesting.

Good luck to you but if this is still bothering you I think you need to look at it again.:wink2:

I just read your post, Lily. My rheumatologist always urges me to call if I experience any ringing in my ears. According to my doctor, it’s crucial to be seen because you may save your hearing if you don’t wait too long. If you are not currently seeing a rheumatologist and suspect Lupus, get your doctor to contact one for you. I concur with others here that you must rely on a medical professional, so get one right away.
