hi all, i dont know if i have posted this in the right place but here goes!:hehe:

I have been having a few problems and was sent to yet another clinic for investigation. First was to the kidney specialist, BP wont come down and slight protein in wee sample. Well got there and was eventually greeted by a dishy looking young doctor, he shook my hand gently and explained who he was so a good immpression was made straight away! He asked the usual questions i.e what are my symptoms, how was i feeling, what i thought was the worse thing to be living with. I explained that i had been dx'd with a possible immume disease (Lupus being indicated) but pain, and tiredness was the worse symptom. He quickly left the room and returned with a sheet of questions about my ability to stay awake. Turns out i may have obstructive sleep apnea and now await tests.I left feeling very positive although he told me i was obese and that it would not help me get better.
Also i saw my rhuemy last fri and it turns out i have Carpal tunnel syndrome too in both hands.

Now my questions are:

1. Can you have other "Tunnel Syndromes" at the same time i.e ulna compressions and even cubital Tunnel Syndrome as have same tingling and numbness of my feet, and although on my hands it is mostly my thumb and 3 fingers that are effected, my little finger also goes extremely numb at times. As does my face and other parts of my body!
2. How common is sleep apnea with Lupus and/or other immune problems.
3. Can all my symptoms be caused by Sleep Apnea?
4. How do you approach a doctor with these questions without sounding like a right loon!

If you have any opinions or advice i would be very greatful!!!!!:wink2:

Gentle hugs to you all

Hi Netty

I haven't been diagnosed with lupus yet but just to add, I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel approx 8 years ago after tests for tingling hands/feets and I believe I have sleep apnea (often wake up 'choking' during the night like I can't breathe frightening both myself and husband to death)! I'm overweight by about half a stone. Sorry I can't answer your questions, however, I would also be interested to know if there is a link with lupus.

Hi Netty

1. "Can you have other "Tunnel Syndromes" at the same time i.e ulna compressions and even cubital Tunnel Syndrome as have same tingling and numbness of my feet, and although on my hands it is mostly my thumb and 3 fingers that are effected, my little finger also goes extremely numb at times. As does my face and other parts of my body!"

I have had the numbness in my feet, but mostly in my hands, and in my fingers. I haven't approached my doctor yet about this , because he wants to deal with one thing at a time. As my health issues are many, we might not get to it ever.

2. "How common is sleep apnea with Lupus and/or other immune problems."

I have severe obstructed sleep apnea, with many Lupus symptoms. They say once you have one autoimmune disease, the rest pretty much follow along. I have been diagnosed with Sjogren's (kissing cousin to Lupus), Anklosing Spondylitis, and Vitiligo (mild)

3. Can all my symptoms be caused by Sleep Apnea?

My Severe obstructed sleep apnea is being controlled by the use of a CPAP. The Lupus symptoms, may have started because the severe uncontrolled sleep apnea, can cause your body and the immune system to break down, causing a lot of medical issues. I landed in the hospital with so much pain, and the inability to move my legs because of that pain. At the time my severe sleep apnea was severely out of whack, even while using the CPAP machine.

Most of my medical issues started when my sleep apnea, became severe. Damage has been done to most my internal organs because of breathing problems (sleep apnea). Once health starts to break down, the damage is done. There is no cure for sleep apnea, and the autoimmune diseases.

4. How do you approach a doctor with these questions without sounding like a right loon!

My doctor at the time recognized my sleep apnea had worsened, sent me for tests and I was put on CPAP, within month of those test.

My present doctor, doesn't know how to handle my many health issues. They have become so overwhelming. If you indeed have sleep apnea, use your CPAP and don't cause further health problems for yourself. Sleep apnea can cause strokes, and possibly death if not treated. It is a know fact that Sleep apnea causes more heart attacks at night if not controlled by a CPAP. It is your health take care of it and don't worry about what your doctor may think.

You have medical issues your doctor is there to treat you. I had a doctor fire me, so I found another one, not sure if any better.

Hugs

Gerri

Hi and thank you for posting replies.
i suppose my post was a bit biazare but i am pretty confused and hopeful at the same time.
I suppose i was thrilled that a dr was seemingly taking me seriously for a change and had come up with some sort of an explaination for all my problems. I know that sleep apnea is not a good thing but i'm sure it is controlable and he said if he is right i could get a whole new lease on life!!!!!!!
As for the numbness and tingling well i can live with that its pain and fatigue i want gone!
i'm sorry and angry at times that people are suffering and some medical proffessionals poo poo it!

take care all

Hi nettyunicorn,
I have sle and sleep apnea. I am not sure how common it is to have both but I can tell you that both cause fatigue all the time and it is bad having one but both is almost too hard sometimes. You will not sound like a loon if you ask these questions, he might be releaved that you have these questions for him. You might find out that the answers will also ease your mind. It is hard to give advice but I feel comfortable that you will not be a loon for these questions. You can share your answers with us and maybe help someone that didn't think to ask those questions.

Update

:bigsmile:Hi all,
hope your all having a pain free day! xxx

Just an update to say that i had an appointment about my sleep study results on fri. Funny thing is as it was Halloween i was dressed as a very authentic witch because i needed to go straight to a childrens party. :rotfl:Appointment was at 4pm but did not see anyone until 4.45pm, thats ok. but then i discovered that they did not have my results at all. I was starting to get a bit shirty when the Dr handed me a short test sheet about occassions when i may fall asleep. I had done this sheet twice before! He asked how i was, "A little confused and cross as i'm sure the results must be on computer somewhere as the information needed to be downloaded off of the instruments!" i said, all this time looking like a witch. The dr looked very nervous to say the least. Well just as he was starting to apologise another dr rushed in and horay!!!!! he had found my results......the first poor dr looked very relieved! lol!
Well it turns out that i do indeed have serious sleep apnea and need a cpap machine. I stop breathing alot during the night something about index of 84, dont really know what that means.
So now not only do i have to wear wrist splints in bed but now add a face mask too! on the look out for a darthvader mask!:rotfl:

Take care all

Oh i made it to the party just a little late!!!!:p

Hiya Mel,

This is a very old thread that you responded too :)

I did notice though that we did have a 'spammer' before you which is probably why you have followed through and aswered the thread.

I think though I am now going to close this one an if anyone needs to bring up the subjects again please feel free to start new threads.
