Hi there,
I have had several toe nails fall off over the last few years. I don't know what it is, but I've heard it's caused by a fungus. I haven't asked my doctor either because it is a bit embarrassing to me. Hopefully someone out there can help!

Hi June B
just to help to further your question.
Since start of last year and actually all my life I had to get my GP (in Australia) to start referring me to specialists (as we have none in our city). So I am on Plaquenil, and over our Medicare Safety Net last year, and now this year.

So I checked on the Net and found the Federal Primary Health Care, where I asked my GP to set that up. That meant I could see a dietician, podiatrist etc very cheaply- :lol:for chronic problems.

So last year I did see the podiatrist re pigeontoes shoes when young, walking gait etc. He even cut my toenails. As inserts he suggested were soo expensive and on Search function here posts questioned them, didn't get them.
Review re PHC I insisted on again last month means I went to the dietician (giving her runoff of lupus diets etc). So later this month I go back to podiatrist as my left big toe is black and nail coming off slowly, although it is my right foot that has the problem.

My daughter, at 5, had similar, toenails deformed, toes swollen, but specialists down south recognised the complaint ,and tablets etc fixed it permanently.

Will be interested to see how you are going.

periodically some of my toenails fall off. otherwise everything looks normal.
they just lift off, freaky stuff but nothing bad happened. people look at you really weird though when they ask what happened, and all you can say is "I don't know, it just fell offf"

Hi lesley, Can i ask what meds are you on could it be them i wonder? my most recent one is Azathioprine. regards june
right now i'm only on plaquenil, verapamil and pariet.
my toenails started doing this around the time i was started to get diagnosed. i have noticed that when it happens there's usually signs of a flare at the time.

Hi there!

I had the same problem! My doctor related it to a little known Imuran side effect. It hasnt affected my fingernails, just my toe nails. I havent found anything to help, but to keep them painted so they dont break/come off as easy or look good doing it!

Best of luck to you,

Chal

Hello, I am a Soldier in the US Army. Before I was diagnosed with SLE there was a Soldier in my Unit who had the problem (toe nails falling off). She had Lupus. I began having the same problem and it puzzled my PA. There was no fungus. No signs of trauma. I have the problem often but I believe it is directly related to the SLE. Never had the problem before. It helps them grow back faster if youcut them off when they turn black and blue. I hope this helps.

I do not take medication although it has been prescribed.
Hi Netrajh, and welcome to the site. You have replied to an old thread that dates back to 2008. It would be nice to know a bit more about you, so if you feel you would like to, please post an introduction in the forum entitled Introduce yourself. Look forward to seeing more of your posts!!
Hi
Last year I caught my big toenail and it came off. I did not catch it badly, and would not really have eexpected it to come off.
I put it down to poor blood supply?
It has grown back now, and looks good.
Hi this is really old thread as debatat has already explained .....dating back to 2008, I'm going to close it, anyone wishing to discuss this topic can obviously start a fresh thread of their own :)
