Anyone with urticarial vasculitis have a problem with bruising? I don't just mean the bruises left behind after an urticaria attack but a high incidence of bruising generally. I have always had problems with bruises taking a long time to heal - at present I have some on my leg from a fall at the end October that are still very visible. Just lately though I have started to notice that bruises are appearing all over the place without me remembering a knock or bang to cause them. This morning I woke up with several new ones that are very painful and it isn't as a result of hubby kicking me in his sleep! :)

So I was wondering if any other UV sufferers have experienced that same problem? I know from long experience that any skin damage takes a long time to heal and that I am more prone to long-term scarring but this type of bruising is new to me. I am going to make an appointment to see my GP on Monday but in the mean time I'd be interested to hear about anyone else’s' experiences.

Hi Eva,

You're not alone:blush:. As far as I understand it there are two reasons why you bruise more easily. One is that the small vessle vasculitis makes the vessle walls more fragile, so they rupture more easily with less trauma. The second reason is that histamine causes the body to make natural heparin (a blood thinner), so the itching literally makes your blood 'thin'.

I have few problems with my UV these days now my med mix is good, but still bruise strangely at times - often over a superficial vein in a bony area. It is like the vein just pops open and leaks for the fun of it, and I'll suddenly get this large bruise with no memory of knocking it or anything.

Are your platelets OK? It is important your docs know about your bruising problems and that serious clotting problems are ruled out, but it is actually pretty logical to bruise easily with urticarial vasculitis:rolleyes:

Thanks everyone - I'm glad it isn't just me!

Sadly I haven't been able to get to the doctors just yet as we have had a sudden bereavement in the family. I will let you know what the doc says when I see him next week.
Cheers
Eva
